We're still around, so demonstrably not.

We've lasted a hundred thousand years, give or take; nothing on the Neanderthals, but we're still adding time and they're not. We've spread all over the planet, wiped out most of our major predators, have regulations in place to keep us from killing the last remaining few- save for our most dangerous and adaptable competitor, with whom we've formed an alliance that's lasted forty thousand years and enriched both of us. We've advanced in technology and infrastructure to the point where, relative to our biomass, we rank among the LEAST disruptive species to the environment around us. Hell, we've even built a society around subverting natural selection.

In what way can we POSSIBLY be said to have failed?
