Ammunition contains chemical compounds which can't be stored unlimited time. Military storage are filled with cold war stuff and Ukraine offers the opportunity to shot that stuff on enemy it was designed for. Just give them few NATO toys and ensure barrels of those toys get never cold, it's cheaper then utilization of this ammo.

Arm the Ukrainians. The Russians have shown themselves weak in Ukraine and the Ukrainians have shown themselves more than willing to do their own fighting. The US has vast stockpiles of surplus military equipment and ammunition enough to arm every nation in Europe and then some, materials the US military is replacing so let the Ukrainians have it.
