Are we getting more dumb as a species or is it just Twitter?

Absolutely! Just look at the moron on your post that blames FOX news for this. The dumbing-down of society is a long-range goal that's been going on for decades, and long before FOX news. The elites need a dumbed-down work force that will believe anything they're told. Why do you think Biden wants an open border? It's all part of the plan. The elites don't want people who think for themselves. Why do you think that the classroom curriculum is trash? It's part of the plan. If parents speak out about the insane classroom agenda, the head of the justice department calls concerned parents, "terrorists." But they love terrorists crossing the border, they just don't like parents rocking the boat of their agenda.

Math and science are now deemed racist. They want you to be dumb as dumb, and it's working.

We have always been a pretty stupid species. The internet just gives people a way to loudly and publicly express their stupidity for more people to see and here without having to deal with the negative ramifications.

I don't think people are generally dumber than they were- albeit our attention span is lessened. I think the problem is that people believe they should, or have the capability of being competent political actors. A vast majority of people are not very smart, nor can think deeply about important social-level issues. They're too emotional, don't have the processing power, nor the base of literature/ history to advocate for good.

However, these average/ below average people are now encouraged/ confident in speaking politically. They have no idea how dumb they are, or how they sound, yet because they fall into an ideological camp they can usually get enough backing to feel they're competent- when they're not.

In the 19th century you had to k ow that of which you speak in order to get a platform, and even then it was only local. Smart phones seem to have dumb users if the new public square, Twitter, is any indication. It was even worse when it was only one sided though. Now if you have the time and are so inclined you can piece together both sides of an issue where previously you were only getting the worst unchecked excesses of one side of the story in a consequence free environment because the other side was censored.

Twitter, TikTok or IG do not cause people to become "dumb" ... it's their willingness to believe absurdities and lies that lends to their stupidity. If you eliminated ALL electronic social media and went back to newspapers, 50% of people would still be fucking stupid and believe bullshit.

We technically are getting 'dumber' as a species with average IQ's in the west dropping.

That said the majority of the loss in cognitive reasoning your observing is simply the fact that people no longer have the need or desire to think for themselfs.

Still the so called "smartest" of us are having the fewest children while being tax to support those who do, IQ will continue to drop until such time that the same systems of support collapse and you start seeing a great dying off of said low IQ people without said support.

That's one reason I don't spend much time on Twitter.

At any rate, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried at all. I wish at times that I could be completely apathetic like some other people I know, but what happens "out there" does have effects, sooner or later and to one degree or another, on me and my family. While at the same time though, I know that there is not much that I can do about it besides voting.

Societies becoming more complex, that kind of behaviours and cultures are really outdated. Time for humanity to grow up, to start with at school and universities.
