That’s perfectly American given what they’re trying to get him on. If they were going after him on an actual murder charge or a rape charges or something like espionage then you wouldn’t see the GOP reaction this way. But they going after him for his lawyer paying off a porn star he slept with from 2006. If Obama had done the same thing this would never have been a case because no one cares that the president slept with a porn start 10 years before he ran for president. Yes, the problem with your notion of federalism here is that we have a whole bunch of states, particularly in the south that are still essentially fighting the civil war and have never forgotten the idea that black people deserve to be slaves and serve them. This is, of course, completely contrary to the ideals in our constitution, but we're pretty much stuck with these people until all of them leave, which would not be such a bad idea. Because of this, we cannot trust state legislatures to behave in a manner consistent with our constitution or with the ideals of hopefully most of our country.

This is the difference between a centralized government and a federal it’s to government. Centralized Washington DC is telling California what it can and can’t do. Federalism California can do what it wants in its own state and Florida can do what it wants it it’s own state. Regardless of the party who rule the federal government your state (California) being blue wants to make its have laws in favor of abortion (for example) vs a federal government standard form a republicans which would outlaw abortion throughout the United States. So California can have abortion and Kansas can outlaw abortion.

The best way to think about the relationship between the states, and the federal government is like the European Union. The European Union has some laws that every country has to follow, but France can be France and Germany can be Germany and have their own laws the same thing applies to the states in the United States
