Not sure how I would feel about a universal language. Being Metis, I see this all the time. Most Metis youth don't know how to speak Michif, and it saddens me that it has not been passed down through the generations.
My initial reaction is, it would be really cool to be able to communicate to everyone in the world.
I think I would have some reservations though, as it could cause people to lose their unique expression to communicate, and possibly their heritage/identity over time?
i don't think there will be a UNIVERSAL language but in specific areas there are common languages - English is spoken commonly enough, Western Europe maybe French, South America Spanish, Middle East Arabic etc and these languages are also spread around the world - Mandarin and South Asian languages are the most spoken but that's more population wise - but i think completely making up a new language for universal use is a bit mmm, people are too nation-oriented to care enough, I mean there are things like the nato alphabet and morse code too I guess, but that's not common use - anyways, power dynamics and political alliances are kinda shaped by language barriers, as in countries with the same/similar languages tend to be geographically close and tend to be allies, enforcing a universal language would only make sense if a supreme ruler just takes over the entire world, and even then remnants of modern languages would still be in use
After war some academics tried to create Esperanto and universal language but it failed. In medieval era Latin ( ancient Roman) was a language of educated elites. However Latin with its 7 verbal cases, gendered declination of verbs and adverbs is too difficult to be usable as universal language. Even though Latin is very phonetic and contains lot of words currently present in Indo-European languages. Mandarin can't be universal language due vowel tonation differences which are practically not noticeable for non native speakers. At least 2000 Chinese sings which are necessary to learn this language are an obstacle as well. I think English will win this competition because of its simplicity.
We will never adopt a universal language because Chinese will insist that it should be Mandarin, US will demand that it be English, etc. and no one will cave in to allow an agreement. However, th development of AI and realtime translators may make a universal language unnecessary.
It'll probably just end up being English lol. probaby not an exciting answer but.. i mean most countries already teach it as the primary one soo maybe more will follow.
I feel English or Spanish is almost universal because so many are interested in learning it or almost forced to learn it in school even in other countries where its not the primary language

I would see a universal translator being developed before a universal language, making a universal language irrelevant. On that same token Math is already a universal language.
With the American upgrades to English and the large numbers of people that speak it as a first and second language, that should be and is the common language.
