Why are homes up north so small?

Like 800 sq ft small. Maybe this is just the urban areas, but when you spend so much time inside why make the house so small?

Not entirely sure what you are talking about but if you go far north/south to the point where you enter regions which gets really cold then there is an additional cost to making larger homes. They become much more expensive to build and much more expensive to keep warm during winter.

I have a house that is over 3000 sq feet. It id really too big for two people so we looked for something smaller. Any neighborhood that we looked you had to build at least a 3000 sq foot house.

Homes up north are supposed to be insulation better with like 12" of insulation.
