Question

My friend who is a guy let his best friend of 10 years and her kid live with him. She was going through a difficult time and he felt sorry for her. And then she assaulted him in his own house.

She had been living with him since January and a couple of months (in March) he was telling me how she was being rude to him. And how she was treating him. So things escalated and she assaulted him.

I didn't ask him if he went to the police or not. I asked him if he was ok and he said yes.

In my jurisdiction (Florida,) domestic violence is defined as “any assault, aggravated assault, battery, aggravated battery, sexual assault, sexual battery, stalking, aggravated stalking, kidnapping, false imprisonment, or any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another family or household member." So, under this definition, it would be domestic violence. But other jurisdictions may have different definitions of what is within the scope of domestic violence.

Probably battery, regardless he's a dumbass for letting her stay for that long. Who cares about her hard times. If you don't make someone give you something in kind for the help you're giving, they'll resent and take you for granted at the same time.

The longer he puts off kicking her ass to the curb, the worse it's going to get for him.

Yes that is Domestic Violence, and your friend should not put up with it, he should record any injuries he received at her hands (pictures, video, medical records if he needed treatment) then report the assault to the police so it is recorded with them, then ask her to leave ASAP, if she threatens to report him for abuse all he has to say is he's already reported it.

He has to be careful as the police have been trained on the Duluth Model where if a female makes a DV complaint it is the male who is forced to leave the home even if it belongs to him and the female was a guest.

It is assault and battery (called different things in different states) at the least, Whether it falls under DV again depends. Some states treat it as such if people are living in the same dwelling. Others restrict it to dating or familial relationships. But either way, it is a crime everywhere in the United States.

No. But it would be assault at the least. Provided there is evidence of the attack.  He also needs to chuck her out toot sweet.

He probably knows he can't go to the police because if he did they would arrest him not her. He would end up in jail while she was living in his house.
