I could do a whole MY TAKE on this!! 💯 I'm rewatching it now, and people are so asleep to what is happening, and this programme touches on SO MANY subjects.. But the thing is, even though it's based on "our time" - don't you think it COULD serve a cautionary tale? 🤔

Who can see 'The Handmaid's Tale' becoming a REALITY in the (not so far) distant future?
The commies already do ritualized sex... Just look at all the sex trafficking and abuse surrounding Pizzagate and Epstein’s island. That's just a scratch on the surface... That said, they don't want to have children for the traditional purpose of starting a family. They want to impregnate their victims and then sexually abuse the new born child from their victims. That's how the left wing is... They are extremely sick people with a different set of traditional evil values that stand in stark contrast to the founding principles of American tradition...
The series on Hulu is way too far-fetched to think it would become a reality. Even though some of the core points you raised come from Margaret Atwood's book published in the 1990s, the TV series writers have taken it well beyond Atwood's book. There's far too much appreciation for freedoms in the US, though many consider the Handmaid's Tale a cautionary tale (and some consider it oppression porn for women).
It's a disturbing series, and there are some subtleties that make me wonder gee, this is sort of happening now - not because some politicians can actually pull off the legislation they want, but it's because they leave little doubt where their minds are at.

Even if abortion and contraception is banned tomorrow that doesn't mean you will get pregnant. For a biological woman to get pregnant she has to have penetrative sex with a biological male and his ejaculate must fertilise her egg.
Abortion isn't a reproductive right nor is contraception. Reproductive rights are more about consensually agreeing to have sex for the purposes of bearing children or to not do that.

The Handmaid's Tale goes far beyond that in terms of a dystopian theocratic society. Christianity is forced on the entire population (those who don't partake or comply are subject to summary execution). Except for women married to the privileged, women are divided into classes, none of which are equal to men; with rare exception (the "aunts"), women are not allowed to read, write, or have money. Handmaids are posted to the homes of couples with barren wives to bear children for them. It's way too far-fetched to be imaginable, but listening to some politicians, we know some of the drastic legislation they want isn't possible but it tells people where their minds are at. If you get a chance to read Margaret Atwood's book (which is where the series came from) it would give you much more insight into where the clamor is coming from. It's a little bit like Orwell's book 1984, people are plucking things from it and going "see, see." But it's way over the top.
Yes, I read the book a few years ago and I've seen all seasons of it on Hulu. It's a pretty disturbing show, but it kind of sucks you in. As I commented in another thread, the show creators took the basics from the book and created several seasons (a lot of material is not even mentioned in Atwood's book). Definitely quality fiction writing and acting, and from watching the series I can tell there's some subtlety inserted that subtly criticizes modern political discourse which isn't in the book. But it's still pure fiction.
I watched a few seasons this winter and quit because the nice weather started. I'll pick it back up in the fall. It's been a good series so far. I hope it never comes to it but who knows. I could see water contamination, food contamination all being issues in the future. If we keep polluting our water supply. Not sure sterilization would be the main issue, but it could be a byproduct.

Roe v Wade was ended by WOMEN. Access to contraception is being pushed by WOMEN. ALL OF IT. It's WOMEN doing this to you.

Other than abortion, 99% of the corporate and government initiatives in the US are slanted to benefit WOMEN, not men. So please. Haven't read/watched it, but definitely strands of that with the religious attacks on women's rights. It's just disgraceful. At the same time, I think women are getting stronger in terms of influence on society, so doubt the US will turn into, say, Afghanistan.
I also think women bear some responsibility for making wise choices when it comes to which guys they reproduce with.
Women don't really seem to care much if the father of their kids is an immoral monster, so no wonder the world keeps being subjected to shitty men.

I have no idea what the Handmaid’s Tale is. Is it a work of fiction? The horror of mass genocide of babies is a reality that happens every day. Shockingly, it is legal and happening in many so-called “developed” countries.
Even some of the worst murderers and serial killers are not sick enough to kill babies.
Anyone who supports a mother killing her own helpless baby while it is growing inside her is the sickest, most disgusting, evil, twisted person.
Women who have abortions deserve the death penalty, and so do doctors who perform them - doctors whose job is supposed to be to SAVE lives.
In most of the world, averaged over the last few decades womens rights have been improving. There are setbacks, some of them serious, but think the overall trend continues. Women get to vote almost everywhere, and so (I hope) will elect politicians who protect their rights.
I didn't see more than I could not avoid. So is it likely a small number of men will be the impregnators of most women who will have children for a living is the question?
I can she that a large portion of the female population only want the top males but what is in it for the top males to support so many children? Don't see it, they'll use condoms.

The only way that this could come about is if the left successfully disarms the population. Its hard to impose a religious dictatorship on an armed resistance. yes, it is absolutely a cautionary tale. The act of othering, making someone less than you is horrible. It lessons rights, it is the base of all atrocities. Gilead was created because of declining birthrates and fertility, ironically enough we are starting to have these same problems, largely driven by feminism and women choosing often pointless careers over motherhood and family. So there may be a Gilead-like backlash, and because modern women tend to be so awful to men many of them probably deserve it.
This is a matter of time.. Merging into 5d from 3d. The human race is in such a slow wake up state, that at the rate we're going, it's going to be too late, if they don't see the light soon!!

It is far from a 1-to-1 ratio in detail. Plus, abortion is not illegal. Legislation regarding abortion was just moved back to the states as it was mandated by The Constitution.
No society would function as shown in the movie. But could there be a backlash against women’s rights? Very possibly. There was one after Islamic culture went through a feminist phase that was highly destabilizing.
