Why do some people think of humane euthenasia in animals as a compassionate thing to do yet are strongly against human euthenasia a person themselves choosing to end their suffering on their terms.
+1 yProbably because someone choosing to end their own life doesn't fit into their "busybody" world view.
If they see it as contradictory to their own personal beliefs, then damn it, they're going to force their beliefs on everybody else, because surely that person would change their mind, if only someone would take that decision away from them! /sarcasm
I'm all for human euthanasia, because sometimes when you suffer for long enough, it's a relief to just end it. Doing so painlessly, in a humane manner, is surely much less horrifying than some other methods (trying not to be graphic).
Only the individual can decide when life/suffering has become so unbearable that one would look forward to not suffering anymore, and everyone else should just butt out.

My depression was so bad I believed I could not survive it. A "compassionate" answer - euthanasia - would have actually stolen the last 25 years of my life. My son would not exist. The others I have since counselled who have fought through the pain and now live joyful, productive lives and in turn have helped others through might have died.
For a human being, every moment of life is precious. A gift.
Animals, even with their personalities and ability to offer something we call love, lack the self-awareness we have. I've stroked the ears of five beautiful dogs as I said goodbye to them. I also held my father's hand as he passed. There is a significant difference between watching an animal die and watching a man die.
Before you equate the two, experience both.17 Reply- +1 y
Human euthenasia is only available in very specific circumstances and is not available to anyone with mental health issues.
- +1 y
That depends where you go. It's been available in a few places for some time where chronic but not terminal illness has caused major depressive disorders over a protracted time with no likelihood of the physical situation changing either in terms of improving or getting worse.
The reason listed is always the chronic illness - ALS, HIV, etc not the depression, but it happens. - +1 y
@Smashingdoozy in Switzerland you can get it as long as they think it isn't selfish.

@Vázquez613 Switzerland don't provide human euthenasia
- +1 y
Is it called Doctor assisted suicide? I am not an expect on the topic. I thought they gave something.
- +1 y
@Vázquez613 yes they provide assisted suicide which is different to human euthanasia. Human euthenasia is a lethal injection provided by a Dr. Assisted suicide is a Dr or practitioner providing essentially an overdose for example to a person who then does it themselves.
- +1 y
Euthanasia in most countries results in a doctor losing their license to practice as deliberately causing the death of a patient is legally murder.
Switzerland gets round this with the "assisted suicide" clause because many drugs can cause death in overdose.
My attempts involved taking 30 day's supply of my chronic medication. My doctor at the time couldn't find any medical reason for my survival after any of the attempts I made. But the doctor is not liable for the death of the patient if they don't administer the drug themselves. That's always been the case. Free will, self determination and the other bullshit terminology absolves the medic from their part in causing the death.
There's a reason why no doctor has ever administered a lethal injection in America. It's the Hippocratic Oath that states "First do no harm". Execution is nothing more than euthanasia for the good of society rather than the individual, but in any situation ending Life is causing harm.
Anonymous(36-45)+1 yBecause they are selfish and rather someone suffer in pain. It angers me the amount of people who are against it. Yes technically it might be a form of suicide but if someone has been suffering for many years with pain and medication is not helping them, while force them to continue to suffer and be in pain. It's cruel

Anonymous(25-29)+1 ySuicide is death at one’s own hand, death at the hands of another (or others) is a homicide. Neither is acceptable. As long as end of life care for comfort and pain management is available, nobody can make a compelling argument for human euthanasia.

People experience pain that no amount of medicine can help with.
Opinion Owner+1 yPersonally I’m not opposed to medical assistance in dying, it’s just tough to overcome objections to it.

2K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Firstly, I support human euthanasia. But it's probably because it's relatively new when it comes to mainstream discussion and sometimes people are uncomfortable with change. But one concern people have is if it truly is on there own terms. There has been evidence that suggests it is being suggested by medical professionals, rather than be originally inquired by the patient. I personally think a medical professional should never suggest it unless the patient inquires about it first. Especially when it comes to mental health patients.
I'm sure some people are also scared as to whether this might be a stepping stone to unconsensual euthanasia. Which I doubt will happen but I understand where those people are coming from.
All that being said, if a person wants to end their life, they should be able to. The idea of forcing someone to live through potentially agony is such a weird concept to me. Like it's not your life, it's not your choice.02 Reply- +1 y
The places where it is legal have strict rules in place and I don't believe it is an option for those who are mentally unwell. Typically the person has to have good mental health, and have an illness that will kill them within a certain timeframe.

+1 yI've only heard that they place higher value on human life. but it makes no sense to me, when it's their time, they will change their mind. I saw this first hand and it's stupidity to force a person to slowly die, as far as I can tell... when they want to end it peacefully with support of family around.

+1 yProbably because of insufficient safeguards to protect those suffering from temporary depression or from mental illness.

I don't think this is a reliable story. The man refused to release his medical records to his family. For all we know he could have been suffering from an incurable disease and just didn't want anyone to know. Better he had control over his death and a comfortable one than starving to death as he intended or perhaps something more gruesome.
+1 yThis is a very sensitive subject as I'm very well aware of. Keep in mind that a person asking for euthanasia, or a person mentally completely lost, does not undergo any cruelty. The real problem is the hypocritical attitude of people around the patient, and often pseudo religious or demagogic fanaticism. And still: who are we to judge?

+1 yMaybe it's because most pets don't seem to ever "give up" (they show their love for their owners right to the end) and they can't decide to just "give up", whereas a person wanting to consciously end it all can be seen as deliberately "giving up"? I'm not saying I agree or I believe it's proper thinking, but maybe that's part of the overall perception?
05 Reply- +1 y
Choosing to end your life in that way doesn't mean you don't care about your loved ones. Infact it makes the process easier on them
- +1 y
I'd say you're definitely correct logically and in the long run. Emotionally, and in the actual moments leading up to that point? It's easier said than done for the vast majority of people.

I had to watch my dad suffer for 6 months night after night and go through that glimmer of hope that comes just before death where he was up and dancing around the living room with me but gone when I woke up the next day.
That would have been made a lot less painful with this option - +1 y
I'm sorry you lost your dad when you were at such a young age. My dad died 4 years ago this month (2019), and even at my age, when you start to expect and experience the prior generation in your family passing on at any moment, it still really really sucked. I admit that it bothered me emotionally when he signed his DNR papers, but I logically understood why he made that decision. A few days later, per his request, he was sent home into hospice care. He was told he had a few months left. He was gone in 13 days. However he got to eat Ralph's Black Raspberry Italian Ice with my son (his only grandson) a few more times those last few days, and didn't have to worry about getting the sugar-free version (he was an insulin-dependent diabetic the last few years of his life). He was in a lot of physical pain at the end, but he also had that time with my son, which I know he really loved and enjoyed.
So the only thing I can suggest to you is to try and see the last few days your dad had through his eyes. I'm willing to bet that despite the difficulties he was dealing with because of his physical pain, it was easier for him to be at peace in the end after having that last great time with you. - +1 y
Absolutely I cherish the moments I had with him in those last days. But I did have to go through him asking me to essentially force an overdose on him. I could have still had those moments had he chosen euthanasia of possible.
Anonymous(25-29)+1 yI think it's because suicide and murder are obviously bad things. And I think people are to caught up in that and don't look at euthenasia as a completely separate thing. People are unwilling to look past that title of it being suicide or murder as the euthenasia isn't. I believe that's where it comes from.
I believe that everyone should have the right to choose to end their own life. Especially in the case of serious illness/injury and pain. I think as well issues would come up with things like if you were paralysed if you didn't want to live like that it should be your choice but many would say it's not right as many others live with mobility issues.
I hope what I've said makes sense. Im sorry I'm not more articulate.00 Reply2.4K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. I don't understand these idiots either and i don't think i want to.
Switzerland has developed a suicide pod, which does exactly just that. How amazing is that? Words probably can't describe it.

+1 yBecause you simply don't have the right to kill a human being and there's always a chance for a miracle to happen before the person dies, ofc only if you believe in god...
Humans are different than animals!
14 Reply- +1 y
Miracles don't happen with terminal illnesses
- +1 y
It does and it happened lots of times, why is it called a miracle? It's because the doctors had lifted their hands from the patient cause they are sure that he/she will die and they can't do a thing about it but suddenly the patient starts healing and lives a normal life again and the doctors don't have any scientific explanation to what happened except that the patient ain't sick anymore, that's a miracle!
- +1 y
No it's usually misdiagnosis.
- +1 y
It can be one or two misdiagnosis but not hundreds of misdiagnosis, especially when it's a terminal illness, the patient would have been diagnosed by a group of doctors using mri's, pat scan, blood tests, x-rays, i don't think that these equipments lies hehe
+1 yCause of potential abuse or power. Who’s to say that the person really wanted to be dead after they are made dead? Or that they weren’t just depressed and in need of counseling?
Animals however are property. True slaves to humans.02 Reply- +1 y
That's why there's protocols in place. Generally the person has to be terminally ill, be in unmanageable pain and only have a few months left to live

1K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. If a person chooses to end their live it is suicided even with a doctors help. The key is choosing. Animals can not choose to, that decision is made for them. The same is done in some cases for humans when they can not make a decision.

You said you don't think it's right for animals... Animals typically get euthenasized when they are suffering and going to die. So I was asking if that is what you think. Feel free to elaborate 🙂

Yes, I understand that they get euthanized. I've just never really agreed with it. It didn't feel right to me.
