I remember learning about this in one of my psychology classes.


You’re right. They have no real power if you think about it.


But, subconsciously, we all associate a police uniform with authority.


It’s the power of the uniform itself — a symbol of authority — it’s designed to make people yield to their authority despite them not actually having any power to enforce it.


It’ll deter most people, because they’re not thinking that deeply into it. They just see the uniform and behave themselves.


But it’s critical thinkers like yourself that can see through the facade and realize that they’re just glorified scarecrows in uniform.


Still, they’re just doing their job and trying to keep the peace. So no need to give them a hard time, haha.

Yeah, they're basically just being paid to observe and report.

They're a major crime deterrent. Think about it: would you want to attack someone when nobody else was around, or attack them, knowing that another man was around whose job it is to physically stop you? What are they supposed to do? Use grappling maneuvers on you, & if that doesn't work, punch you out.

To run away and call the police- and, bluntly, to serve as a deterrent because the authorities will investigate a murder WAY more thoroughly than a breaking-and-entering or a minor robbery.

And just having security around is enough to scare away most people.

They report the crime on a walkie-talkie and call the police, and they probably go up to the person and say stop what you’re doing and hopefully that they’ll leave obviously they can’t make any arrest

That just act as a blocker and push people and the press out of the way so you can get through. Usually you pick somebody big and scary looking.

We have them at our church services, but they do have some "protection items", short of a firearm.
