Public libraries are paid for out of your property taxes in most cases. Do you really want to pay even more so that you can exercise at a gym instead of your own home? Not everyone wants to pay for that when there are so many more important things to spend tax money on, like homeless vets and other homeless.
Ooo it requires taxes.
Unless it is at a University or college.
Its called parks, you can't make someone exerciser if they don't want to. Having the goverment finance gyms membership would be a disastrous waste of money.
As people not even willing to buy a gym memberships would show up at even lower rates than the very very low rate of those who are willing. Getting people off their butts to exercise requires a lot of motivation.
No, and I don't even think there should be public libraries. I would rather see public Wi-Fi. I heard they have it in Seoul, Korea.
As for the gym, walking and exercising is free.
I would rather see the money go to feeding and housing the homeless.
Yes, that could help a lot with so many people being overweight.
I totally agree.

no, the goverment would only screw it up and I would still have to join a private guy AND pay for a gym i will not use.
Probably true because the government isn't run via fear. Government employees and contractors have no fear of punishment. That's why we need to address the real issue and install new managers of government officials first
Give the managers the power to beat and humiliate the officials. Fuck that would be so epic. Strip Lindsey Graham naked and force him to walk down the street for having a big mouth like he's a drunk
Maybe public gyms should be next to public libraries so after you work your muscles you can find a good book to work your mind as well.
Almost nobody new would show up to the gym given how few the people who actually invest money with the intention of working out end up actually doing it.
Modern gyms are built upon understanding this math that only a fraction of the people who will maintain membership will ever actually show up.
So if you @Static_In_The_Attic are looking at expanding access to the population that didn't even have that much intention your going to see only a fraction of that.
Regardless government's do invest in public gyms, they are called parks. In many of them you will find man made exercise equipment too. Althou you were taught in school this equipment is NOT needed.
Competition is a wonderful thing & if you build it they will come. There was a gas station & it was the only gas station around & the gas prices were extremely high but people needed gas so they had to pay. Year after year the prices didn’t go down at that gas station in fact they went up & were always above the national average. One day someone smart came along & built a gas station down the road from the high price gas station with lower prices & suddenly there was a shift in customers.
You can build public gyms however they have to be clean, safe & the equipment has to be top of the line & always in working condition. Public gyms can charge people to get in at lower prices & public gyms can also have a membership program as well. Why should private gyms make all the money.
Are you @Static_In_The_Attic unaware what a goverment is? They don't make money, they tax, they don't run anything well because doing so offers the politicians consistently elected for completely different reasons or by ignorant population no advantage.
So your goverment Gym doesn't compete with the private gym who is forced at gun point to take a portion of their sales to finance the Goverment alternative.
Nor is it likely to ever be well maintained for the reasons given. Politicians are good at getting elected, that is their job, They are terrible at actually running anything as that generally doesn't reflect their election. You should
Thus if the private sector options survive at all bankrolling their opposition it is simply because their leadership is soo vastly superior to the politicians.
As for you gas station story its true competition is good, goverment simply doesn't offer honest competition and the gas is not cheaper if we are forced to pay for it via our taxes as well.
@monorprise You are absolutely right when you say the government doesn’t make money but they sure spend a lot of it.
Yes, like integrated rec centers that have a library, gym, pool, and outdoor spaces all together.
I have been to more than a few cities that have this, and it doesn't work.
There is a nice city rec center where I live. It’s good.
community centers are a good idea but that's not why we have an obesity problem and probably won't help. obesity is 75% diet and 25% exercise
Whatever the government pays for comes out of our pockets. Remember that.
No, you can exercise for free.
Exercise without weights is a waste of time
Yea I do I spend 15-20 mins doing 6 weighted sets that would take 30 sets without weights
No one seriously does kalisthenics unless you're in prison and have 4 hours to exercise
Like….. a community centre?
Sure, would be cheaper
Before we go down the road of free Healthcare, we need to go down the road of free gyms and free cafeterias with decent food. Otherwise we will be paying doctors pennies to support obese people eating like trash because theyre in poverty. Make many foods illegal as well starting with coca cola.
Everything in moderation, some people just over indulge, coca-Cola is fine once a week especially the one from Mexico where it’s sugar only and not corn syrup like they put in so many foods to sweeten, which is probably causing the obesity
Coca cola is a problem because since it's inception its tried to make people addicted. Why is coca cola so popular? Because it's popular. Why? Because they put cocaine in it. If that didn't happen root beer should be more popular. At this point its just a brand and people love brands. It needs to be illegal. Specifically coca cola. Other cola can stay.
You might want to do some research because they haven’t put cocaine in Coca-Cola since around 1929 , it doesn’t have any in it , probably just the sweetness and flavor is likely why it’s more popular and the advertising
Mostly just a waste of money in fact, not only would it compete with the pubic parks which already exist for that propose.
The share of the population that actually shows up would be very small perhaps even smaller than the population already using gyms as much of the motivation for that population to exercise is to get their moneys worth from the investment in said gym.
Otherwise they would be more inclined to simply use the already free parks. That means you might actually make things worse by crashing the gym industry.
@monorprise you have a point, people won’t be motivated
@monorprise you sound so conservative. Conservatives like to argue theoretically based on human psychology against every idea that would make people happier and healthier
@myownman2 There isn't much theoretical about people's choosing not to exercise even when given free options to do so. And yes they already have free options to exersize the most healthy way every city, via already free parks which go largely unused by nearly all of them.
Indeed in many of those parks you will even find gym equipment, again mostly unused, many more people who rent apartments or go to hotels also have free access to gym equipment. Again mostly unused. Some places also have very low cost or even free public gyms like you suggest, again mostly unused.
A lot of people like the idea of exercising, some of them will try to compel themselfs to do so by buying a gym memberships, even then shockingly few show up.
If you want more people to exercise you need to examine human nature and figure out how to motivate it. They clearly don't need money.
So you're really telling me it'd be too expensive right... cus weights definitely cost less than all the tanks and helicopters that have been sent to Ukraine and quickly blown up
If they did it be to dangerous to go there
