as i understand it, sex is biological (though certainly not 100% binary all the time) and gender is fluid. me personally, I consider myself binary, but i believe, for instance, in masculine and feminine energy. If you are infatuated with a woman and don't know why, it may be because you need to incorporate some her feminine qualities into yourself to be more of a complete man. When people choose how to identify, we must respect their choices, whether or not we see them the same. Identity of the self is more important than identity from the outside. That's my take at least.

Gender in the modern sense is by definition a social construct as it's rooted purely on cultural norms, and in an increasing fashion, personal whims, and not biology.

The modern term is a euphemism, however, sex and gender until very recently were synonymous.
