Do you like Italian, Chinese or Indian food, thank an immigrant. You can't thank immigrants for Mexican food because they were here first.

I LOVE ethnic food, you name it, Vietnamese, Thai, Korean, Indonesian, Filipino, Middle Eastern, ...

German emigrants to the United States brought Hamburg steak with them. It showed up on New York restaurant menus in the 1880s. Hamburgers became a sensation as sandwiches at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis.

It is believed that the first hot dogs, called “dachshund sausages”, were sold by a German immigrant out of a food cart in New York in the 1860s – perhaps explaining how they acquired their canine name. Around 1870, a German immigrant by the name of Charles Feltman opened the first hot dog stand on Coney Island.

At my job as a motor vehicle damage field adjuster/appraiser in the Los Angeles area, I met immigrants from all over the world - car owners and body shop owners. I love immigrants. They were kind, courteous and generous, and treated me better than did most "white" people.

From shop keepers to scientists, immigrants have contributed immeasurably to the United States and American culture.

But, in this day and age, I am opposed to the idea of open borders. It's too bad because all the way into my 30s, it was easy to cross the Tijuana border. And I know that there were places along the border in other states where people crossed back and forth every day.

Efforts to close the border for one reason or another have occurred since the late 1800s. They always backfired.
But the modern "border crisis" began in 2014 when the US declared a crisis at the border due to an influx of unaccompanied minors and women making their way through checkpoints.
Since then illegal immigrants have flooded across the border. There were 2.4 million encounters at the U. S.-Mexico border in fiscal year (FY) 2022 alone. Who knows how many have entered the U. S? Who are they and where are they from?

It's unfortunate but, as a matter of security, we need to check every person entering this country. And they should not be allowed to stay without proper documentation.

The answer to your question for me requires taking into consideration historical context and the present state of the U. S.

No country in history has been as generous at accepting immigrants as the U. S. Since the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 took effect, the United States has admitted over 70 million legal immigrants. Think about that because it's a staggering number. A great many of these people became good Americans and assimilated to our culture and system of government under our Constitution. But many did not. That's why we still have to "Press 1 for English" and that's why we have Palestinian immigrants in the country protesting in favor of Hamas. It's why we have Ilhan Omar and Rashida Talib in Congress, who don't like America and who support Hamas. In the context of our legal immigration system, it is a given that we choose who gets to come here. And the government authorities have chosen very badly in far too many instances. Most of the 9/11 terrorists were here (at least originally) on legal visas. What benefit accrued to the American people by allowing them and so many others into our midst?

Any sensible immigration system should benefit American citizens first and foremost. No one in the world has a right to immigrate here. It is a privilege granted by law, over which Congress has authority.

When you see Mexicans in the United States protesting for amnesty while waving the flag of Mexico any sensible person would say that something has gone terribly wrong.

It is also (and this is very important) an issue of sheer numbers. As I mentioned above, the U. S. has admitted 70 million people through the legal system over a span of about 50 years. How large do we want the population of our country to become? The U. S. has abundant resources but they are not limitless. The population is around 330 million. If we stay on our current trajectory by mid-century it will be somewhere approaching 500 million. I said that the U. S. has abundant resources but that has to be qualified as a statement. In most of the Western states water is scarce. The American West is already overpopulated in terms of just having sustainable sources of water. What happens to our natural resources and open spaces when the population grows as it has? We already know the answer. Ever-growing population pressure impacts our natural inheritance. It also leads to traffic jams. Lol.

Too much immigration --- both legal and illegal --- negatively affects the job prospects and wages and salaries of American citizens. This holds true for both blue collar and white collar jobs. It has been well documented how American tech-related companies replace American citizens with foreign workers at lower salaries. They do this through abuse of the H1-B visa. In many cases these Americans who lose their jobs are required to train their foreign replacements (usually Indians) in order to receive severance pay. Think about that.

And then of course you have the disgrace of rampant illegal immigration. It is well known by people who have studied this issue how to essentially stop it. But it takes political will to do that. Our current president has allowed 8 million illegals into the United States since taking office in 2021. His appointees haven't even made a pretense of securing the southern border. These illegal immigrants are essentially welcomed in and given public benefits. EIGHT MILLION PEOPLE!

I could go on. But I'll just note that we not only need to stop illegal immigration, we need a moratorium on almost all legal immigration in order to assimilate the 70 million who have come in the last 50 years. We have done that before. In the 1920s Congress restricted immigration in order to assimilate the Great Wave of immigrants who were admitted between 1880 - 1920. We are currently in another Great Wave that dwarfs the previous one.

Take a look into the Canadian system and a small bit of research will show the mass immigration from India, many by fraudulent means, and taking in of refugees that does nothing for the economy

And keep in mind, I'm also not saying this to be a negative or spiteful person, it's just the case of what's happening

Depends. I have no problem with Europeans and east Asians which want to work and live here. Illegal immigrants who just want abuse social systems in generous EU countries avoid my country because we don't have any money based welfare.

Yes, and I've helped some get to America. But it was a lot of work, because we did it the right way.

Though I hate people in general, I have no direct hatred towards anyone. The United States was founded by immigrants. Not the actual land, but the United States. I think a good number of people have forgotten the importance immigrants had in building the country. However, there's a difference between illegal immigrants and legal immigrants. I believe everyone should have to take a citizenship test to become a citizen of the United States. I used to work with translators and it's rather shocking how many hateful Americans there are toward immigrants. Most of them are just trying to build a better life for their families. The bigotry, the racism, the hatred, some of these Americans displaying these should be ashamed of themselves. We're all people that breath the same air.

This country has gone from the land of opportunity to the land of racist bigotry. I don't care of someone is Latino, black, Japanese, or any other race or ethnic background. A person is a person, and people are ignorant for slamming other races and cultures. I'm going to get slammed for saying this. There's always at least one person that gives me the "Immigrants need to be deported" speech, and go for it... but just remember, I'm not the one with the problem. The person with the hatred has the problem. We're all God's children.

I dont really care about other people, be they immigrants or not. That said, I understand the benefits they bring to my country. If we oversimplify reality a bunch into video game terms, then immigrants are basically free resources. Of course there are some requirements to avoid problems in society but they are not really difficult enough to worry about, especially when compared to the benefit of getting more people, especially more people which you dont have to raise from birth since that is an incredibly expensive and long process.

    Here, I'm an ''immigrant'' myself.

    Yes - I like me :)

All those who don't like people from somewhere else just because they're from somewhere else , most likely never have seen a different part of the world. I don't blame them.

    I just pity them.

In all honesty, I wish they stay in their countries and take half the locals with them. Would be nice to replace a couple of shitholes with a park or two.

I don’t know many, but I don’t get the hatred. Just looking at the stats, they increase economic growth for an area.

But they have no voting power and so are an easy target.
