For me it’s probably Caesar, who was a man of the people (allegedly).

I am not naming one person, as it has been probably seven years since I was actively involved in learning history. Anyway, these are my favorites going off the top of my head:

Alfred the Great: his vision and understanding of building his people to run more efficiently.

Julius Caesar: Badass and I always liked his rise to power. He feels like an OP anime character to me almost, lmao.

George Washington: his overall awareness and ability to delegate his men - that includes officers/generals like Benedict Arnold. Also, the fact he was not perfect adds some charm to him for me.

These three are not the greatest military leaders, but they're just my favorites. I am pretty sure Napoleon was better than those three in each area. However, I could be wrong, since I never learned too much about him some reason.

Not necessarily a military leader but an influencer of many military leaders, Niccolo Machiavelli and Sun Tuz, whom was an actual general.

But in modern times George Patton and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Patton for his success’s in North Africa and his ability to humble himself to a fictitious army after replacing Omar Bradley during operation Quicksilver.

Eisenhower because he had the foresight to invade France with such an overwhelming force to defeat Germany, and the knowledge that he was sending so many young lives to their deaths for the sake of the free world. That, of course, laid heavily on his conscience.

Alexander the Great was probably a military Genius but without people who keep what he conquered his successes didn't last long.
Winning a conflict does not grant political victory automatically, some aggressors will learn it soon.

Thomisticlies, Admiral Horatio Nelson, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Chester Nimitz, Erwin Rommel, and I just bought a book about Gen. Garnet Wolsely which I’ll crack open this week and render an opinion on later. So far, he looks promising.

Notable mentions to Julias César, Stonewall Jackson, Douglass McArthur, Duke of Wellington, and Saladin. Sadly, the best military leaders with the most inspiring stories usually occur at the tactical level and not the strategic one. Thus, they rarely have the historical credit they truly deserve.

General Theodore Roosevelt III, also known as Theodore Jr as he was President Teddy Roosevelts first son, and cousin of FDR, you don't hear much about him, but he insisted on being in the first wave of the DDay landings at Utah Beach and directed operations there in real time. His reasoning was that the GIs seeing a general on the beach would boost morale because "if they let a general be here it can't be that bad"... the high command didn't like the idea but he was Teddy Roosevelt's son, and, like his father, when he was set on a thing like this, it was happening.

The scene described in interviews from Utah Beach veterans is reminiscent of Lt Col Kilgore in Apocalypse Now of a military leader walking up the beach with his cane, bullets whizzing past, mortars exploding around him, knowing, just knowing he is untouchable... any leader who is willing to put himself in the same danger as the men he commands deserves a medal... and he got one

Weird you mentioned that, I read about it the other day. I also read that his son was fighting on another beach.

takijiro onishi - otherwise known as the ¨father of the kamikaze¨ who proposed the idea of using suicide tactics in war for japan.

when the war war was over he wrote this haiku

    oh, how uplifting
    the moon shining so clearly
    now that storms have passed

then he killed himself with a short sword

(japanese term for his suicide is jiketsu, or ¨self determined final judgement¨)

Genghis Khan. I've studied Genghis Khan & the Mongol empire extensively & it is absolutely incredible what they achieved. They had the largest land empire in history, & conquered both China & Russia, which no other people have managed to do.
