If our second amendment ever got taken away from us what would happen in this country?

I am not sure. We have gun prohibition here in Japan and it's a very safe country, but I think that's more due to culture than anything else.

Like here in Japan, you can see elderly men unloading millions of dollars worth of cash into bank vaults completely unarmed. The idea of robbing a bank is just completely alien to Japanese as with committing everyday types of crimes in general, with the exception of organized crime (Yakuza, Triad, and Nigerian Mafia, but they largely stick to their own ways with their underground activities to avoid causing a scene).

However, Japan has a natural geographic border being an island nation, so interdiction of things like firearms and narcotics is fairly easy and quite successful. It seems like a very different case in the US.

Also with gun prohibition, it makes it easier for law enforcement to do their jobs. For example, if any Japanese people hear any gunshot, that's going to be reported left and right. It's very difficult to get underground firearms into Japan in the first place but, secondly, it's going to cause so much attention if anyone fires one since no one is supposed to have them.

It's also not as though gun prohibition eliminates violent tendencies in people. The few Japanese who resort to violent crimes do it with alternative weapons like grenades (popular with Kudo-Kai here in Kyushu), pipe bombs, sarin gas, there are mass murder incidents like in Akihabara where a deranged man (Tomohiro Katō) bulldozed over people with a truck and then stabbed additional people with a large dagger. Those can still rack up a lot of injuries and fatalities and especially ones like grenades and sarin gas tend to harm innocent bystanders.

Also we're completely defenseless here if our government becomes tyrannical. I think that's the main practical protection that the 2nd amendment provides is not defense against crime but defense against government.

I suspect also if we had something like the 2nd amendment here, violent crime would not rise by much, if any. Japanese these days are just overall nonviolent people with or without guns excluding the occasional drunken brawl (which is almost always just a fistfight at most, never a stabbing even though knives are legal).

When Japanese hit rock bottom, many just commit suicide. They don't harm other people. Culturally we're uniformly taught in a way that makes us very averse to violent actions except in self-defense.

So about the only people who commit violent actions here are the most mentally ill, completely deranged psychopath types, and they're an extremely small percentage.

Beautifully stated- and quite correct. Despite what every politician on Earth would have you believe, complex problems don't have single causes, and they rarely have SIMPLE causes, either. Getting rid of guns doesn't make violence go way; witness the UK. Giving out guns doesn't make violence go away; witness Afghanistan.

@NamerOfStars Cheers! 🤝 I really believe in the fundamental principle of the 2nd amendment in that it transfers the responsibility of protecting rights ultimately to the individual and not the state from the way I interpret it, and I think at the end of the day, it has to be an individual responsibility. We can't grow too dependent on the police and military to protect those rights when there's no guarantee that the government will always effectively protect them let alone never infringe upon them.

I also suspect as we go further into the future with the internet, 3D printing, drones, AI, etc, that it's going to become increasingly easy for people to simply forge their own devastating weapons. At the very least, I think we'll be crossing some threshold (if we haven't already) where it'll become far more practical to deter violent impulses in the citizens of a nation than to try to eradicate all possible tools that can initiate such violence.

we aren't far from that... e. g. criminals would have rights to take your stuff, you become a slave of the system. you should visit france for a glimpse of what its like, but USA be worse.

e. g. they build gates around every home. They avoid renting... because if person doesn't leave, they may lose their home. Thieves just come in and take everything, not much recourse.

Now you can havea gun in france apparently, but if you use it... you go to jail.

The other thing I think might be possible again would be mass slaughter. See the division in peoples... not much stopping "torch bearing psychos" from trying to wipe out those they cannot tolerate. Those would be extremists either side but more likely on the left.

Aside from gangs taking over the country and fucking over law abiding citizens, it would lead to a total erosion of any and all rights we (at least pretend to) have.

A couple years back, Canada banned sales of firearms. Now they are jailing protestors, freezing their bank accounts, forcing other citizens to remove the peaceful protesters off the streets and most recently any notion of freedom of speech has been shattered by Castro Jr. jailing people for speech crimes (again).

But hey I'm sure school shootings wouldn't be a thing anymore. So, banning kids form buying or possessing firearms didn't work. So all those 'gun free' zones didn't work. So all the red flag laws didn't work. So having murder be illegal didn't work. But I'm definitely sure disarming law abiding citizens will. After all, why would power hungry politicians lie to me?

Some people will think twice before they shoot up a school, as they have to leave the house now and go in a back alley to get gun and ammo.

It's literally not possible. America has more firearms than people. You can make a firearm for $30 at a hardware store. You can 3d print firearms as well.
