- police and government corruption
- bad English skills
- ugly towns, but beautiful landscape
- weak school system ---> little knowledge beyond 'basic'
- friendly to strangers, but culturally not flexible
- taxi and tuk tuk scamming (add: jetski rentals)
- frugal and greedy at the same time
- not all girls here are pretty
- elephants are just tourist attractions
- low environmental conscience
- 100 meter walking is 'too far'
- next month is 'too far'
- very polite, unless being wealthy
- egalitarian to an extent that wrong becomes right
- foreigners are welcome to bring money; otherwise: shut up
- Thai men are (most often) immature and egocentric
- Thai women are (most often) mature and egocentric (unless the sick mother needs help)

Very interesting. I’ve been thinking about visiting Thailand to train Muay Thai. I was shocked at the cost of living there and I could pretty easily pay for a room for up to a year.

I’ve always loved Muay Thai and some of my favorite fighters are Thai. Plus I think it’d be cool to go watch some fights at Lumpini stadium.

The gym I’m looking at is way down south on the peninsula, close to the beach and more of the ocean side of Thailand than in Central Thailand.

I sort of want to take a bus from the South to Chang Mai in the North at one point just to take in the country. Buuuut that may also be incredibly foolhardy. I know Thailand has its corruption and crime and I’ve read that a lot of people there have guns. I don’t want to get robbed and dropped off in the jungle 🤷‍♂️

I’m a pretty experienced traveler and have been to over a dozen countries. However this will be my first foray into Asia.

I have zero interest in dating, finding a woman, or taking advantage of a Thai “massage.” For me it’d be more about the training and the sight seeing and digging the culture.

Many Muay Thai gyms have other visitors training from all over the world. Brits, South Africans, Aussies, Americans, so I sort of feel like I wouldn’t be completely “alone” as a Westerner there.
