Why is Lebanon such a diverse and different Middle Eastern country? Why is the diaspora so large, influential and widespread in world culture?

I mean this out of genuine fascination.

You have the largest represented (as % of population) and most influential Christian community of any country in the Middle East (by far). One of the oldest and longest lasting (if not the oldest and longest lasting) Christian communities in the world.

A diversity of faith within the Christian community itself (Maronites, Melkites, Greek and Armenian Orthodox), and then also a diversity of religion within the country itself, with an almost even split between Shia, Sunni and Christians.

I just find it fascinating how any one country can have such diversity.

Especially when said country is also very different from its neighbors, who are predominantly Sunni and Muslim.

Also, as I understand it, there is also a decent amount of trilingualism (Arabic, French, English) spoken.

And the Lebanese diaspora as well.

Being from the US, I’ve met many Lebanese people in the US.

But as I understand it, they’ve also immigrated to other places as well like Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela and Colombia (and probably a lot of other places besides those)

Also Shakira and Salma Hayek would be examples of celebrities within the Lebanese diaspora, as well as the current President of Paraguay, and many others that can be seen in the link below (a shockingly large amount)

But for such a small country and population, why is the Lebanese diaspora so succesful, innovative and influential in world society?

If anything, I think US society stands to benefit from Lebanese immigration.

They’re obviously a very entrepreunurial and highly succesful people.
