I heard that the way it works in organized crime (not just mafia but most street gangs) is that foot soldiers make almost nothing at all. Then as you go up the chain, each level under the boss pays a percentage to the next level up. It works out so the guys just below the boss make 1/2 of what the boss makes (or less). But if you do the math... you would be better off in a nice corporate job than doing anything in organized crime short of being a top level leader. Then there's how they handle work disputes. The mafia HR department is not going to baby you when you complain or quit. They will just have you executed. Main reason being that they're paranoid about snitches and someone who leaves or is unhappy is a high level risk. My guess is that working for organized crime is a lot worse than working for the worst office job type business one can imagine and you don't get to complain or leave.

If I had to choose, I'd actually be a hit man cause that pays insanely high amounts and, assuming you can refuse jobs, you can limit it to people who KNOW they are in a life or death war so it's no different than exterminating rats. If they made you kill innocent people that'd be a deal breaker for me.

But I don't have to choose :)

The modern day mafia is useless. They used to keep order where the cops couldn't. Now, they're hunted by cops, because they're competing with the rulers. And it's all about greed. Old days were much more romantic. The mafia used to run the city I live in, and now those families are all just shady businessmen and the scumbag street gangs took control of everything. Things are 100x dirtier and more dangerous now.

That's a long rant to just say that today, I'd pick businessman. In the 80s and before, I'd go with mafia.
