What do I do about my work allowing a old lady to be scammed?

She comes in at least once a week. Needs to talk on the phone. She claims she’s in danger and keeps wiring money. Nobody does anything to stop it. I’ve tried saying something but there’s excuses made. They don’t want to do anything it’s obvious.

It’s sick because everyone seems like nice people. But they’re allowing a old woman to be scammed to make a profit. She’s talking to dudes with a heavily Indian accent. She’s wiring hundreds of dollars.

Definitely it’s okay to provide safety protocol, warnings, and resources. Even if co-workers disagreed, your own work ethics is yours and how you wanna serve with integrity to your customers.


Professionally, people don’t always agreed with me, but if I see that it’s not okay, I’d question it and follow my own professional judgement of what is the best next step. I know it’s uncomfortable but I’m sure you know what’s the right thing to do. If they fire you and you live in America, it’s illegal for them to give you bad references. It will also be a blessing in disguise to no longer work with people who appeared “nice” but don’t give a damn on serving their customers with good quality services. Heck I rec complaining to HR after doing the right thing.


Tbf I have many co workers in the past who appeared “nice” yet have poor work ethics that never sits right. So I kept my own distance because it doesn’t aligned with my values & profesionalism.

where do you work? if its a bank, then you'd need to report to your local authority.
unfortunately most police and such need HER to help herself and report it. but may be worth a report about it anyway

I don’t want to be fired. I feel bad for her. But it seems they care more about profit then helping someone being scammed

read your employee contract/handbook.
if they fire you, sue for inappopriate termination...
get in contact with owners/higher ups than your branch manager.

@EmmaMary the fact that my managers and supervisors have said it’s none of our business. When they’re using their phones and their union to wire money

They are very hard to get ahold of. They’re so busy and rarely in the store

In that case I wouldn't hesitate any further in notifying your local police authority.

@EmmaMary thanks if I need to I will. I’ve tried asking the lady how her days going and what she’s doing. But she says she’s in danger.

The manager said she’s just a crazy old lady. She said that we’re trying to help her with whatever is going on and that it’s not any of our business.

Then it's time for you to stand up as a man and do the right thing when others won't. You talk to the woman and explain to her what is going on. Tell the cashiers to not allow the wire transfers.

I’ve tried. But they tell me it’s not any of our business and our job is to do what the customer wants. The old lady doesn’t want to talk to people except the people doing the transaction
