Of course. However it was repressed if you were trying to openly express such views and could cost you your life.
Many however were opposed to god without stating it. A lot of atheists pretended to be religious but said skeptical things as in a way to vent out they weren't really committed to the idea. This was a risky thing to do but some did it anyway.

There might have been but they would not be secular in public cause it could lead to jail or fines. I was watching a lecture on scientific proofs for God and a man who went to the lecture says he grew up in a religious country and was atheist and had to fake faith in God cause they might kill you if you are atheist.
