Do Social Media Influencers help or hurt society?

It depends. People who make accusation are problem.
such as awful actress who said "cut off family if they are nutral" n "you can't be nutral when republicans whatever"
N "i canceled my father for" n this is not just someone with an opinion this is someone inciting her "vast fan base to hate republicans" just kuz they liked her in hunger games or marvel gasp!
that destroys family and hurts even nutral who don't wanna get involved.
makes even nutral outsider like an enemy... and makes republican seem "hostile" when we just oppose or don't support stuff.
Hurt society. They have triggered the promotion of a very toxic environment that is addictive and which influences other common mortals to think they should or want to be like said influencers. What people seem to forget is that what you see on camera lasts literally 5 minutes and the moment the lights switch off that influencer is invaded by a sense of feeling overwhelmed, stressed and unhappiness because the pressure of putting up an act for the sake of earning money and a few likes is too much to handle. It's not real and that's not what life is about. People care too much what others think of them and we've all forgotten to be ourselves and live like nobody is watching.
@thegreenyogi totally agree
@thegreenyogi i was going to write same but saw your answer and it's well explained
Thank you!!
To your last point...can they though? The reason some are so fake IS because of the way people react to them. If they express things like their true emotions all the time, talk about their political views, or say they don't like someone or something, they get absolutely slammed in the comments and in media. So they become a sterilized version of themselves that will allow them to still be commercial, but without any "real life" substance because it hurts their branding.
Thank you for the MHO!
They’re walking advertisements 90% of the time, so they have about an equivalent influence. Which really just boils down to “money” at its core.
i think "in general" they're just a mouth piece for corporate interest and therefore a mouthpiece of the government and the establishment. they're selling their soul to the devil figuratively speaking. they're seeming like "one of us" while clearly they are being payed not to be. there's few ones who aren't and those are usually slandered and labeled as nazis or "random word goes here"-ists or straight up censored. so yeah. i think overall, they're more of a plague than a blessing.

Always been a thing even Betty boop.
Even Christopher Columbus was a propaganda for the American revolution as an influential icon just because he didn't come from British government. Even if he didn't land in North America proper. Hence why we don't speak Spanish in the United States of America.
They are what they are.

My, my, my. Social media + influencers. Why does it reek of a toxicity cocktail from just here alone?
I can imagine how social media "influencers" are telling the talentless social media addicted bimbos, that they are perfect angels deserving only the top 5% of men, who are 6 feet tall and all that.
If they are misinformed then they are hurting.
If they are open minded & do long extensive research on the topic then they are helping by spreading good information.
Good points. I do think some are excellent. The danger lies when someone gets big, and people have stars in their eyes for them, and they say or do something hurtful, and people defend them or ignore the obvious red flags that can lead to things like real world legal problems.
Yeah! I’ve seen crappy ‘prank influencers’, ‘challenge influencers’, ‘true crime influencers’, and ‘anti vaccine’ influencers that plague the young minds since they idolize these individuals and trust them (sometimes) more than their doctors, friends, teachers, parents, grandparents, etc.
I’ve also have seen cases where the person has family & friends guiding them in the right direction though ONE influencer agreeing with their behavior, they see self validation for their unrealistic & harmful goals which gets them into legal trouble, mental trouble, financial trouble, more. It is a dangerous world out there and we don’t need influencers making it more dangerous to people whose problems could’ve been avoided.
Which re-validates the fact that influence is power. It has always been, but web 2.0 made things extremely more complicated by generating so many spheres of influence. Before 2.0, we had a manageable array of "controlled" influences, printed press, school programs, literature, movies etc. These days... It turned into total chaos. Which is concerning, in itself, I think
@Maybe_Maybe_not Very concerning and very true & accurate.
Press pause. You are asking this question on the social media that is GaG, on this social media some of us, from a relative scale, are influencing society.
Isn't it... Interesting?
Yeah, people who say, "I'm not a part of that," are kidding themselves. When you flip through their internet history, or see the brands they buy, or who they follow on any platform...they are being influenced by one or another. It's just cool to say, "I don't bother with THOSE PEOPLE," but yet, they do.
Yes, I would assume this is not necessarily hypocrisy at play, on our part. The issue is about how misleading the word social media is, and it's already being addressed by @MisterWack
Why don't you call them what they really are... advertisements. On TV they are called commercials. It's weird that some people like watching commercials. I've always ignored them.
I don't think they matter what so ever.
here today gone tomorrow, and people are following the next latest greatest someone who really doesn't matter.
Yeah, it's a hard one to sustain long term because what you're putting out could be trendy for this year, and next year, who are you. People will always want more and the newest, latest, and greatest.
In most situations, hurt. I know only a few influencers that actually do something good and help.
I'd say if you added them all together I'd say probably hurt
Mainly because there's more dumb ones than good
Pointless unless they are actually educating and have a degree in said topics and such.
Some of them are actually helpful but many others are just assholes
Some hurt it. Some help it. I would say the majority of them hurt it though.
Slowly they do influence others, it's where most trends come from and trends only exist through influence.
I think they kind of hurt in a way. A lot of young people are watching other people live their lives instead of living their own lives
Back in the day we called those people gossips and busy bodies being all up in other peoples business…. Social media makes them something special…. Go figure…..
I think they're more bad than good, overall. It's just a job at the end of the day.
Both and neither. Depends on contexts, causes, effects, etc
Hurt. Especially since they believe they are talanted. Which they aren't.
So you think none of them have talent? I hardly believe that. I think plenty are delusional about their talent are skill, but some have produced amazing things and gone on to commercial or advertising success.
I still do not understand the concept of media influencers. It seems stupid and vapid.
Definitely more on the negative side.
Neither. They are just marketing agents
ofcorse they hurt it
They are out to help themselves
Depends on the content
