There were over a million abortions in the USA last year.

I would like to make it illegal. I think it’s evil, a horrible thing to do. It’s murder. Don’t have sex if you can’t deal with the consequences, it will also stop people from hooking up and having meaningless flings etc…

We have declining birth rates too, we actually need these people, who’s gonna look after the country as we get old?

I only agree in very exceptional cases of abuse or severe health affects on the mother or her having zero means to care for a baby. But again, only very exceptional cases.

I can understand the moral argument being against abortion. If you believe life begins at conception and treasure the value of life above all else, having it taken away before you have the opportunity to even breathe can feel emotionally devastating. Of course you’d want to protect that life.

However, in the grander picture that experience is very small and I do believe abortion should be fully legal in all situations. I know pregnancies from rape and incest are rare but children born from those circumstances wouldn’t be loved if the mother never wanted them, and I doubt the father would have done that to the mother for the sole purpose of having a baby to take care of. Not to mention even if the mother gave the baby away to the foster system or private adoption, that’s not a guarantee that it would be properly cared for. The foster system in my nation is overwhelmed with children to the point it’s very easy to lose track of them, the same with private adoptions. Did you know that a huge chunk of private adoptions from South Korea to America had falsified documents? These children were told their birth parents abandoned them and their lovely American family adopted them and saved them, the reality is many of them were stolen from hospitals away from their parents and given away for profit. This just recently came out but it says something that the demand for foreign adoption was so high there were people willing to literally steal babies that were planned for and wanted by their biological parents just to sell them to foreign families.

Not to mention that when it comes to the sanctity of life, we also have to include the mother and not just the child. We have to remember that a parent who has a child they never wanted is going to be the greatest source of that child’s suffering, and that there are women who would rather risk death and infertility with back-alley abortions they do themselves than have a child they don’t want. Their quality of life diminishes when that choice is taken away from them just as it diminishes the potential quality of an unlived life taken before birth.

There’s also a very massive political aspect to consider when you give the governing powers authority to decide who does and doesn’t get certain medical procedures. I’m sure our political leaders do what they believe is best as they act in the interest of their voters (or at least the lobbyists that give them “gifts” in exchange for their time) but they’re not doctors. They don’t know what a person does or doesn’t need to live their best quality of life without that complex medical education. There are women who have miscarried in states where abortion is now banned where they have been denied the procedure they needed to help them through it because it is now illegal and forced the doctor to choose between saving the woman a lot of pain and suffering, if not her own life, or keep their job. They’re just given pain medicine, told they have no choice and there’s nothing the doctor can do, and tell them to pray that it’s not an ectopic pregnancy as that miscarriage would undoubtedly kill them. To just blanket ban abortions with no nuance to the individual situation just because of that belief that life begins at conception is ultimately more harmful than beneficial. More women get hurt and hurt themselves when that choice is taken away, even more would gladly risk jail if it means surviving without an unwanted child. It ruins the quality of life for many, many more people than it would save and for all of these reasons this is why I’m pro-choice.

this is tough. Im pro choice on this but only to a degree, there should be rules in place (Like the timeframe in which a termination should be allowed) My best friend had a termination last year due to her unborn having heart and brain problems, they told her the survival rate was very low and the baby will probably unfortunately pass during the pregnancy, at birth or shortly after with the conditions he/her had. She chose to terminate earlier on for the sake of not putting the baby (fetus at that time) through any cruelty and i completely understood it.. but grieved with her completely! watching her go through that was really really intense. I also understand that people are raped, tricked and peer pressured and end up pregnant, so they should be able to have that choice as things happen!!

But here's the thing... Careless people are getting pregnant, not finding out until later on due to them neglecting their health and responsibilities, which in turn your neglecting their responsibility to avoid having to do this! and then having an abortion at 11+ weeks when the unborn actually has a heartbeat, skin cells and forming organs by then. Its disturbing when i think of it like this. Very confusing i say, but overall, id probably go with pro choice in certain circumstances and mostly under a 10 week time frame.

I’m pro life but my beliefs are complicated. I actually support using state sponsored funding for contraceptive science. You want to remain childless your entire life? Fine. But let’s make everything possible to stop white from meeting red.

Also I do not support a nation wide ban on abortion even though I am pro life. The whole logic about overturning roe vs. wade was about not using top down centralized power to override a local voter preferences. In other words California (and Washington DC) shouldn’t be telling Texas what to do or vice versa. A nation wide ban is just reversing the authoritarianism. So no I never would want that.

However I truly believe modern pro-choice advocates are really motivated well beyond just not wanting the inconvenience of having a child. It’s devolved into sole sort of twisted Marxist identity in recent years. Like killing your unborn child is a form of “fighting” patriarchy or some complete insane nonsense.

Seriously if republicans hate leftist women and minorities so much (and those groups are generally pro-choice) then why would stop them from embracing their own extinction? It’s not about “controlling” women. It’s about protecting innocent human life.

Pro choice, its a controversial topic and there are reasons for it and you will never make every abstinent from sex. Sex is human nature no matter what. Also, using contraceptives isn’t 100%, neither is birth control and neither are the vasectomies or tubial litigation.
Example: my friends ex got a girl pregnant and he got a vasectomy years ago. There are also stories about women getting pregnant after getting tubes tied because the body tends to heal itself over time.

Accidents happen where people do use precautions and still end up pregnant.
If abortion is completely illegal, that means in cases of rape, and children who also get pregnant will be forced to birth babies which has already happened in a few red states.
If abortion becomes illegal it will put women at risk to practice at home abortions.
Making abortion completely illegal will also raise infantacide, meaning women will be forced to birth babies they don’t want and they will most likely kill the infant after birth. It has happened already and does happen.
There are enough kids in foster care we don’t need to add more unwanted kids.

As someone who had to have a life saving abortion due to an ectopic pregnancy where I lost one of my fallopian tubes. I now have a higher risk for another ectopic pregnancy. I can never carry a pregnancy, the risks are way too high. But it would be an incredibly long fight to find a surgeon who is willing to do a hysterectomy on a 26 year old childless single woman. So I'm just supposed to never have sex until I reach menopause? That's stupid.

If you think the ONLY purpose of sex is to reproduce then you would either only have sex a couple times a month to try for a baby or you'd be popping out kids left and right. But no, I'm sure if you're in a relationship or married whatever your preference is you'd be wanting sex every single day if not every other day or once a week.

Before you go on about how there would be allowances for rape, incest and life threatening cases. That is already a thing. But because people who have no idea about medical care have written legislation there is a grey area. Women who are ectopic, who have had missed miscarriages are dying. Yes. Dying. This is happening now. This isn't a what if. Women are bleeding out in hospital carparks going into septic shock because Drs cannot treat them until they are literally dying for fear of being arrested. They know the fetus isn't viabile. They know the woman will not get through it without medical intervention but their hands are tied. Women are being criminalized for having miscarriages. Miscarriages! Women who have lost their VERY much wanted pregnancy are being criminalized because their pregnancy failed through no fault of their own.

This is what happens when you criminalize basic healthcare. You care so much about saving lives? Save the ones who are already fucking breathing.

Yeah no, pro-choice. Murder is the killing of a human being, and what defines a human being is someone who is currently living right now and is breathing the same air as us, not an unborn embryo. Conception can happen under multiple different circumstances as the comments have said.

Rape unfortunately exists, and nobody should be forced to keep the child of ones rapist.
Some people have their tubes tied, or some other biological contraception. Nothing is ever 100% so sometimes it doesn't work and conception occurs.
People are also not physically able or fit enough to carry a child.

These are all very real reasons why people get abortions, and they should have a choice. If it is their body, it's their choice!

It's actually done A TREMENDOUS amount of good across ALL areas of society! It's kept countless women, families and children out of poverty! It's reduced taxes by not having to educate, house, heal all of those unborn using tax dollars! There's higher quality daycare because the ratio of caregiver to child is reduced. I am neither and I abstain because it is not directly a problem I can have.

Where I have a strong opinion is that it should be a form of birth control. Contraception is not rocket science and is easily achievable. I always use condoms because I want to have direct control over my liability for child support.

I think it is repugnant to use abortion as a birth control method when lesser methods could have been used. In my country there is a peak at abortion clinics in February when it becomes apparent that the girl did indeed have a good Christmas and New Year.

I tend to think getting drunk and pregnant is just deserts for being dumb.

From what I gather Abortion is legal all of the US States, though some States have strict guidelines on when/how they may be done.

As I no longer live in the US I no longer have a dog in this fight, but as far as I'm concerned Abortion should not be used as a first/only means of birth control. It would make more sense if other forms of birth control were available for women as it is in the UK from their Doctor at no charge, but given the way that the US heath service is strangled by the insurance companies and Big Pharma I doubt that will ever happen, even though in the long run it would save the insurance companies a load of cash. I'm pro-choice of sorts. I define abortion as the willful termination of a pregnancy. I believe that a woman can do this at any point during the pregnancy as an extension of the right to self autonomy. Even if you give consent that consent can be withdrawn later. When a child is not able to exist outside the womb this termination will result in its' death. When the child is capable of being saved a cesarean should be performed and every effort should be made to preserve its' life.
