I'm just a tad stressed. Our company relies on inbound freight from the port of New York ork and New Jersey. Can't exactly send out trucks to pick up that freight at the moment. I don't think people realize exactly how much of the goods we use come from overseas. Especially food and medical supplies.

At the same time, our company is supporting the strike. Shipping companies, including mine, worldwide made record profits but that extra money didn't exactly trickle down towards the workers that make it all move. Our drivers and warehouse workers all received extra bonuses over the last 2 years to the average of 10k per worker. Those guys at the ports work A LOT! They deserve an extra slice of the pie.

It's more likely people are hording toilet paper because the hurricane. For one, they are trying to gather supplies to donate to those in need in a disaster zone. That generally means people and organizations horde food, water, first aid, hygiene supplies, and fuel. Then they take those supplies to the disaster zone and distribute them to those in need. That out of the way the main concern is that the south east produced 60% of the nations timber. With a lot of counties impacted by the storm and agriculture (timberland) being negatively impacted, it could lead to shortages even though toilet paper is produced in the USA. Port strikes have nothing to do with TP shortages being that it is a domestic product.

China's economic structure is different from ours. The way our system is set up, automation wouldn't work well. China's a socialist market economy with relatively heavy government intervention. USA is a mixed market economy with light government intervention.

Automation wouldn't put MANY out of a job. No jobs means no money flowing in to businesses that rely on every day consumers; mom and pop shops would effectively be the first to suffer the death blows. It's a vicious system. China controls how it works and regulates it. Here in the US where the almighty dollar is king, we wouldn't have those regulations. Of course, I'm talking long term affects 20+ years from now

I can answer that. My conpany works in close quarters to them. Most of them make around 75k. 100k+ with significant overtime. Veteran workers can clock 200k+. Supervisors more than that. All depends on what your responsibilities are. I can only speak for the workers in NY/NJ: after taxes and with the cost of living, thar money doesn't go as far as people think

I am sure that the dock workers strike will impact most of our lives in some way. As a union member myself. I have seen our future contract expire and having to work on two contracts at the same time. We had several years of hoops to jump through before seeking “Self Help”. Meaning a strike. Then several “Cooling Off Periods.” After all of that. If we did strike. There was an injunction placed against us so fast. Your head would spin. Then the union and company would be forced to Binding Arbitration. Which most of the time the company would win out.
The striking union people maybe should have taken the 50% pay raise. They could get less!

The issue is that, no matter what union you're in or what contract you have, you can't stop progress.

When cargo moved from items being individually loaded to being containerized, 2/3 of longshoremen ended up losing their jobs. A handful of people could now do what used to take 50 or 60 guys. And soon we're going to have automated cranes and ships and trucks, and we'll only have a handful of guys to keep track of them and deal with the occasional glitch, and 80% of dock jobs will be eliminated. THAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN, NO MATTER WHAT. It's pointless to pretend otherwise.

Hollywood went on strike trying to keep out AI, but guess what? AI is already being used by everyone and that's going to keep happening more and more - and it's going to reduce jobs. You can't stop it. No one is guaranteed a career that is impervious to disruption by new technology. NO ONE.
