Why is abortion such a hot topic in the USA this election?

Maybe I am out of the loop, do that many women get abortions on a regular basis? Or is it more the possibility that they may need to get one and want to have the option open? Or something else?

Because the American Left has convinced American women that they're under attack, and abortion is the vector. Consequently, it is-or should be- INHERENTLY the most important issue to them, and anyone who opposes absolute unlimited abortion rights is trying to "control women".

In fairness, the Supreme Court DID overturn Roe V Wade (the ruling which said that no state law could prohibit abortions), which was the legally correct thing for them to do. The reaction was angry, which is understandable, but not in any coherent way, which was sadly to be expected. The complaint was "the federal government has no right to tell me what I can and can't do with my body!", which was exactly what the court had said. The anger then turned to Donald Trump, with completely unsubstantiated claims that he would "introduce a nationwide abortion ban", despite the fact that 1. he'd never said anything of the kind (and he does NOT shy away from needlessly inflammatory speech!), 2. he's not, and has never tried to be, a member of Congress, which is the only body that could make such a law, and 3. the Supreme Court had just said the federal government couldn't do that.

Now, there ARE Republican Congressmen and women who WOULD try to ban abortion at the state level; fair enough on opposing them- but that's not what the rhetoric is about. The very brief answer to your question is "because the Democrats can't be bothered trying to appeal to voters on any real issues. Biden's pushed the country in some terrible directions, and Harris has either done nothing or supported them, and decades of indoctrination mean they can't let abortion go, so the more logical and universal reasons to oppose Republican leadership (and there are plenty) get ignored.

They also tend to be more complicated, and both parties LOVE their oversimplified talking points. We got a lot of this from the other side during the Obama era, with their "Obama wasn't born in America!" (which WOULD disqualify him from the Presidency, but was repeatedly proved untrue) and "Obama is a Muslim!" (which wouldn't matter one damned bit, AND isn't true), and nothing about "Obama is woefully inexperienced!" or "Obama has openly thrown in with a hate movement!".

It's about manipulation, not reality.

there's homeless veterans on the streets

illegal immigrants who rape and sex traffic children are being released

people are working multiple jobs to make ends meat

jobs are being shipped overseas

there's no funds left for victims of natural disasters

and World War 3 is right on the doorstep

but somehow unrestricted abortion is what they're willing to die on the hill for

It's our right to decide what happens to our own bodies and medical choices. No government official or stranger should ever have a say in what you do with your own body, nor force you into parenthood, lifelong debt, damage and possible death.

If only they told them how much in debt they are making them and how many are being slaughtered by way of their decisions... how many are homeless and starving in the streets, etc..

What most people don't even know is that black women get abortions the most (and I am black so I'm not being racist) while white women cry about the right to have abortions more than anyone else. It's rather ironic. So what I wonder is, why are black women getting them the most? And why are white women crying about it the most if they get them less? I think these are the questions we should be asking.

Its a culture war. Because the right wing lacks any policy positions that they think can win them the election they instead latched onto the nearest culture war they could either find or start. Abortion has been a wet dream of the right wing for ages which makes it a perfect contender and with the repeal of Roe earlier its perfect for their electoral needs.

Most of the people pushing this culture war does not actually care but this is their one chance to gaining power.

Who knows women already have the option to vote with their feet, if they really wanted the option. Why they would throw away their one vote on inflation, immigration, trade, and war & peace.
