I asked ChatGPT to give me the list of all genders, and it listed 72 separate genders.

Interestingly, the simple genders that most of us are used to seeing, Male and Female, Man and Woman, are not in the list. The closest genders on the list are Cis Man and Cis Woman.

What's going on?

Add genes that interfere with masculinization or feminization and you can end up with boys with vaginas, girls with penises or boys who spontaneously develop a penis during puberty. These all occur naturally and with some degree of frequency in certain communities.


Anthropology/social studies wise there’s a minimum of 4:
Cis male
Cis female
Gender nonconforming male
Gender noncomforming female
Plus intersex folx.


Most cultures have some method of categorizing these, though lots have tried to erase them (looking at you abrahamic faiths). In my culture we do man, woman and two spirit/queer and two spirit people use a variety of pronouns etc to describe our experience. When I was in Tonga it was men, women and faka’lati.


Gender studies wise they’ve taken the above facts and added a new identity for each, this is essentially an approach at a non-secular version for a multiethnic society. So there are as many categories as people identify with. This is so that multiple cultures with multiple interpretations of this phenomenon can share space.

Human biology is such that if you have the SRY gene, typically found on the Y chromosome, you are male and if you don't you are female. Chromosomal anomalies, being born with extra or missing chromosomes, often end in miscarriages and those that do survive to birth are almost always infertile. Boys don't end up with vaginas or girls with penises without medical intervention. Those who are classified as intersex were born with genitalia that was confusing to the doctor; not because they weren't male or female, but the doctor couldn't figure it out. All of these abnormalities are rarer than the T+ community; but they rely on using them to garner sympathy for their cause. Trying to confuse us to think it is a biological condition when it is actually a mental condition. A mental condition often brought on by sexual abuse during early childhood. I know this first hand because both gender dysphoria and sexual abuse run in my family. Not to mention that I studied biology in college with a focus on genetics.

It's simple people are beginning to explore there identity. There are lot of people who may have been considered "male" at birth, but they don't really feel like other men. Maybe they behave a lot more like women. So they identify as a trans women. Maybe someone who was considered female at birth doesn't identify with men or women. So they may consider themselves nonbinary.

I know for most people this is kinda strange. We identify with our birth gender so much we don't even really think about it.

I don't think we need to understand why people feel the way they do. I think we just need to treat people with dignity and respect.

At the end of the day, these are just words for categories that we made up. Sure there are reasons those categories exist and you may like them, but at the end of the day it's just a bunch of sounds.

So lets just let people live.

Latin is a language.
Cis in Latin means on the same side.

Opposite of cis is trans.
Means on the other side.
For example Transatlantic opposing sides of Atlantic.

When it comes to gender
Cis man means someone who was born as a boy (biological boy) and then grows up to be a man.

It's not that hard for someone who knows language use and don't intentionally misunderstand.

The reason many people have a problem understanding is many intentionally misunderstand. Because they think it's more fun to be homophobic/transphobic/etc.
They rather be discriminatory then learn proper language usage.

In most cases just using man or woman is enough.

Like in many cases you could just say
"That guy over there"

Instead of
"That tall hetero man over there who likes football"

In most cases you don't have to be overly specific, just specific enough.

Being overly specific is not technically wrong. But it is redundant.

The short version is that cis means on the same side.

cis woman = born girl, still girl

The reason you didn't see man and woman is because those are technically abbreviations or umbrella terms I think. Man would be either cis man or trans man. Same for woman. So if you just ask to lost out all genders, it won't list man woman it will list out the specific one by one.

Anyway most genders u don't need to worry about, as long as you know the basics (the "man" "woman" "nonbinary" categories, if you don't know and it's relevant then just ask, and if you're told then just believe them) you should be fine. Nobody is gonna quiz u on genders the most they'll do is ask u to say something different if u accidentally get theirs wrong.

the gender people have the idea that you can pick and choose whatever gender you want. the main ones for them are cis man & cis women (means basically man and women. cis means you're biologically that gender and you identify psychologically with your birth gender), nonbinary (meaning you dont feel male or female or you feel like both. mainly because you dont fit in your mind, your biological gender because of your personality. these are the people who use they/them pronouns), agender (you have no gender. i dont see the diff between that and non binary, but apparently it's a wholy different gender), genderfluid (your gender fluctuates day by day. one day you might feel female, another male, another neither, etc), trans woman or man (self explanatory).
