The large US market gives the US power that can be harnessed through trade constraints which are certainly better than a kinetic war. So I would say use it USA.

Selectively applied tariffs would affect electric vehicles yeah but probably not gasoline vehicles much. At the same time for those low in the economic tiers, tariffs are going to make more jobs available so it both helps and hurts poorer people.

Given poorer people get financial support from those that earn more and get taxed more, at the macro level there is a trade off between job support via tariffs and straight welfare costs. No idea how this plays out in the US. I just want to point out there is a balance irrespective.

There are geopol aspects of course. I don't know how China thinks it can be belligerent to the US and the US will continue to buy their junk. Some timely reminders might avoid unpleasantries that will otherwise cost dearly.

I just think it is more complicated than a consumption tax that hurts poorer people. My gov't's expenditure is 36% on welfare so logically you should balance out what welfare costs versus what job support via tariffs costs and minimize the social cost.

Of course my gov't doesn't do that because it would require thoughtful government which is quite above it's paygrade.

Japan was once the cheap manufacturer then Korea. Currently China but it is Bangladesh for textiles now. Manufacturing can move around; as with Japan, cheap labor was China's primary resource and all other inputs have to flow in. But cheap labor is cheaper elsewhere now.

A lot of large companies are exiting China and decoupling.

As a general rule the feds have always used taxes and/or withholding of funds as a way to coerce compliance with whatever they want. This is an old old tool.

Hell, to a large degree the entire tax code is written that way.

Much of this stuff amounts to off-the-budget government programs.

Biden kept inflation here lower than just about any other country which took effort because of supply chain issues during covid that jacked up prices everywhere around the world. Under his administration we exported more oil than under Trump. Trump auctioned off leases issues to expand drilling and Biden did take advantage and absolutely signed the permits during his administration to allow MORE drilling. So both presidents can say they played a role in that. He did block some land from being drilled to protect the environment which is good and should be protected. Oil companies have access to land to drill but don't always do it. We can't force them to because presidents don't control the oil companies.
