Now, by sheer coincidence, in another of my great questions, I was discussing the English channel with a few GAG members. One of whom pointed out the French call it, "La Manche," which means "the sleeve."
Other European countries follow the French nomenclature, Canale della Manica (Italian), Canal de la Mancha (Spanish). To be awkward, we Welshies call it Môr Udd (The Lord's sea)
There's no international agreement on what you call places. America is perfectly entitled to call it the George Washington Channel on THEIR maps. However, one British politician has come forward with the Eisenhower channel after the war time General.
It's not unusual for countries to rename things within their own borders as the result of public pressure, but are we now heading towards a global renaming war? Names we settled on centuries ago scrapped and replaced with derogatory ones or in our own honour. Will we see a global tit for tat as leaders spit their dummies out of their prams and keep the cartographers busy?
