Why did Europeans reject the French idea of strategic European autonomy?

Probably because it really just meant French-German Domination.

With Americans calling the shots each European country was more or less secure and didn't have to do much because America generally didn't care being on the other side of the Atlantic.

But we Americans were getting more and more tired of European freeloading and conserved with other problems far from Europe. So we have been slowly moving to abandoning Europe for 20 years now.

Germany had a similar idea in the late 30’s but at least they were upfront about wanting to be in charge.

The truth is, Europe is a melting pot of cultures and ideologies that require different kinds of government


To have a true “one europe” you would need to extinguish that diversity and put in place the same tax system, the same school system, the same ads on tv, basically turn it into one single country

I'm not sure I understand the question, but the way that I perceive it is that the French proposed that the EU should be an independent project from NATO and should defend themselves. IF so then I agree that they should. I don't think they will, because they can't even protect themselves and the EU is a failure of a project. Brexit. Italy. Etc.

We here are interested in having the EU act as a hedge against Russian aggression so we can focus our efforts on China.

To my knowledge, nothing was rejected. The discussions between France, UK and Germany about that are just starting (probably accelerated by the recent Trump show).

It's not true, France has been talking about this for over 40 years, and so far Germany has always refused.

That was about Germany simply joining the nuclear shield of France. Not in any way a wider European concept. Now with NATO in danger of being abandoned by Trump, some sort of EU wide solution (WEU 2.0?) is becoming a necessity.
