Are plane crashes getting more common than mass shootings in the states?

Yesterday, there was yet another American plane crash, this time in pennsylvania. I don't know the details, so I can't say if DEI or Musks cut backs were to blame.

But they do seem to be a regular thing these days. So, are the plane crashes the new mass shootings?

If anyone has been paying attention to aviation for the last 20 years, there have been LOTS of warnings from people in the industry that things were bad and getting worse.

Boeing's merger was McDonnel Douglas completely changed (many say destroyed) Boeing's culture and leadership, which before had been based on and run by engineers, and became far more focused on finance and accounting. Boeing's lines of business have been falling apart visibly for 20 years, so that lines up.

There's also the problem that the production of many parts have been farmed out to China, and those parts, while cheaper, are also lower in quality.

Two of my friends started their adult working careers in airline maintenance, but both left within 3 years, because the culture was so toxic, and being ordered to break safety rules to keep planes flying. This was 25-30 years ago, so it's almost certainly worse today.

DEI hiring practices have eroded both the pilot and the ATC communities. Despite shortages, white candidates have been passed over for less qualified candidates of color, and those folks often quit or get fired during their first year on the job, reducing available staff and reducing morale.

These aren't problems that can be fixed overnight - the lead times for fixes are measured in years, not days. Trump has addressed some of the problems already, but he may be out of office before noticeable change is visible to the public.

Many things in life are on longer timelines. A lot of food takes a year or even many years to go from planting to harvesting. Movies typically take 3-5 years from idea to box office. Many qualified people have been avoiding pursuing careers in aviation because of the many problems and anti-white discrimination, and it's going to take years to go from changing policies to attracting candidates to train and test them before they can be hired, and then more time before their presence can be felt.

The right things are finally starting to be done, but while some things change quickly, others simply take a long time to change. That's why they can't be allowed to degrade in the first place.

The current perceived rise in plane crashes is more likely the media taking greater notice of them rather than there being an actual rise in plane crashes. Videos of hair-raising near misses began to trend on-line and the US Transport Secretary Sean Duffy sought to calm fears statistically there have been no more plane crashes in the last two months than any other two month period, analysed data in the US and worldwide and found that over the past two decades there has been a general downward trend in air accidents.

On average there are 45,000+ flights in the United States a day & day by day planes are getting older & require maintenance so between human error, pilot error & mechanical failure unfortunately crashes happen. Where there is smoke there is fire & where there is fire you will find news crews looking for ratings. Statistically the number of crashes have been going down, knock on wood.

In 2023 there was 659 mass shootings in USA which is almost two mass shootings per day. There has not been two plane crashes per day. They are going up however and with Trump gutting the agencies behind air safety its bound to result in more but its a bit too early to tell now.

Notable however is that your perception of reality has been shaped by your consumption of news.

The FAA has been mismanaged for the last 4 years. They are short of staff and they have ancient computer hardware. Things have finally started to come apart at the seams. Giving clearance to a helicopter to regularly cross air traffic lanes did not help either,

DEI was literally a process to do outreach to spread job postings to a wider array of people demographically. They still go through interviews and qualified people are hired. The myth that people are hired ONLY due to skin color and qualifications were not analyzed is untrue.

But saying buzz words is more fun than actually learning about things I guess. The fact that this seems to be even with Musk's cuts to AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL personale is disappointing.
