All i can see is pain coming from these tariff increases. I don't see anyone getting helped by this, especially not americans pinching nickles to get by day to day. I don't see anything good coming from this right now or in the future. If it was anyone other than trump in office right now, people would be so pissed off about this it just doesn't make any sense. when you do the math, we gave China 462.62 billion dollars in 2024, we sold them 143.55 billion. So we handed them 319.07 billion dollars more than we took in creating a huge trade deficit.
If you keep giving out more money than you take in, you tend to run out of money, quickly.
So, in order to help level the playing field the idea is to make the goods from China cost too much to purchase, we can make it ourselves for less.
So, for China taking say half of that money out of their economy roughly 231.31 billion dollars is going to hurt their economy big time.
Loss half of your pay but the bills are the same. You will fell that.
In the end it can help the US manufacturing, money from the tariffs can be used to help the US manufacturing grow so now they can be competitive and have a level playing field.
The US can live without China, we grow enough food, have the raw materials we need, oil, cola, natural gas, wheat, corn etc that we need. China does not.
There are ships that load wheat in Superior and go to China, that is a long haul. So once China starts to feel it where it hurts then things will get better. It doesn't happen overnight, but it can and has happened.
Other countries have already caved in I read that Canada has, but I would need to do more research on that.
The end result was that the US made products would not cost more in China as they do in the US.
Have you ever seen what a Harley costs in China and other countries? In some countries it is more than double what they cost in the US.

Your numbers are a bit high. China hovers around 15% of US imports. But if he actually follows through it will lead to massive price increases. Even if you cross the border to Canada and buy a Nike T-shirt that's made in Vietnam, you'll have to pay the 46% tariff on that shirt.
