China snubbing it's nose at the US, along with India and recently Korea and Japan announced that there probably won't be a trade deal with the US worth signing. Canada just said no thanks today. Hard to argue that a shift away from the US and towards China isn't underway.

So just to be clear. China's new action has been known since June. It all amounts to people now needing licenses to purchase and sell some of their rare earth minerals, especially those used in making weapons. This is honestly pretty common trade practice.

Is this potentially scary? Sure. China is the world's, and this is not close people, largest nation as far as trade goes. Yes, yes, BNP and we can argue different but that is living in fairyland and in terms of trade done and production they are the giant. When the world's largest nation that controls a lot of important resources says they will increase supervision over how these are traded that can be used for extortion. Extortion, like trying to leverage how important of a trade partner you are to others, can be scary.

Now. We have known China would do this since the first, illegal we might add, tariff Trump issued in 2025. We have known this because this was always the obvious move that won't harm civilians but carry political weight. Plus you know, they said it. Multiple times.

Heck, even Trump's own people knew which is why Greenland got so much attention because guess what Greenland has that is currently not exploited? Most of these minerals. Although Trump is suspected to have also has a deal with various oil and fracking companies. And yes, 50 years in the future might control a vital trade route.

Trump is being a child having another tantrum over what is very clearly a political play to show bartering leverage. And if he knew anything about doing trade, making deals or China he would have done this off camera. Because China cares for its reputation a great deal and if he mishandles what is meant to be a tactful reminder, they might double down. And to any US citizens, please realize you lose this if it becomes a two-sided trade war. Does not mean your houses explode but it means you get poorer. Alienating your own trade allies months ago makes it even worse. It is like Trump is trying to screw the US over.

A reasonable response would be to show off an excellent relation with Europe, especially Denmark, to highlight that this move can be mitigated and reduce the political capital it carries. Not... whatever toddler response this is.

Yes, China;'s actions require a strong measure of response. I am a little shocked at the respaonse from the markets but in the days that follow it will become clear that the USA will not be pushed around by China.

Every day the US is making more and more of the products that we need for national security as we decouple ourselves from the Chinese economy.
