Why do people speak behind back?

I have always heard some rumours about me, the way some people speak behind me, they try to treat me like an as*hole and laugh about me very easily, why people think they can talk shit? And it’s like words can’t hurt you and also the way you are never changes but the thing I dislike the most is that people are actually there to spill secrets about me, there’s no one to trust. I have had a bad and good reputation amongst people. And i chose not to give a fuck, but why am i always in a limelight is that a boon?
