Will Smith has just claimed he's Welsh based on the fact he grew up in an American town with a Welsh name, Bryn Mawr. Some how he made it through his entire life without asking what the name meant or it's origin. The Welsh government have written to Mr Smith asking for an apology and retraction.
But he's not the only one. Trump claims to be Scottish despite hating Irn-bru, never wearing a kilt, or eating a battered Mars bar. The closet Biden ever came to being Irish is impersonating a potato for 4 years.
You'll often see Americans claim to be Welsh, Scottish, or Irish, often basing their claims on distant ancestors. BUT you rarely see one boasting about being English. Why is that?
Will Smith probably also thinks he can claim to be a bald eagle and that makes it true. Why not English in articular? I have met a few Englishman and spent considerable time around them. My sister's husband was born and raised on the outskirts on London.
I have English ancestry' if I told you my surname, you would automatically assume English ancestry. I don't have an inherent bias against the English. But the ones I have met were all pompous, condescending asshole. My brother-in-law would attend our Thanksgiving dinners and always informed us that in England, "only n_ggers eat sweet potatoes." He constantly criticized the country though he was quote eager to marry my sister amd het his American citizenship. His constant reminders of how "things are much better in the UK" got old and annoying very quickly.
I am sure that all Englishmen are not like these examples, but these are the examples that I know.
I would assume that people in Europe judge Americans on the basis of their interactions with American tourists, and they are representative of all American people, either.

Hmmm, I know Bryn Mawr. I too never thought about the name. I didn’t know Wil Smith was from there, they can have him. It means big hill as you probably know and I didn’t until I just looked it up.
Many places here have names from elsewhere. Many of the places in the US are derived from American Indians. We have German names, English or course, Spanish, Dutch, French, you name it. Many languages are represented.
That town is in Delaware county who gets its name from the Delaware Bay (good fishing there). Delaware gets its name from Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr in the UK. Lots of names here have deeper meaning but life is fast and who has time unless it’s your town. Smith probably heard it but probably forgot.
Maybe you just haven’t run into the ones who will openly say they have English ancestry. Also USA is also an English speaking country so maybe when they think of the word “English” the country England might not automatically come to their mind since the USA is also an English speaking country so country
English is often considered the “default”, at least among many Americans, to the extent that many take it as a given that they have English ancestry and don’t think about it too much or find it all that interesting.
American perception of their own identity is just weird. No, it doesn't matter if your friend's brother's neighbour's pet dog's cat friend's owner was Welsh, that doesn't make you Welsh. You're just American and that's it.
It's because Americans are mostly haters of the English & know fuck all about our culture or heritage. They like to think of themselves as Celts with their pretty little knot works whilst failing to understand kilts & knot works came from Anglic traditions because the Celts don't have anything original they didn't take from us English. Even the "Celtic cross" is originally Anglo-Saxon.
The Americans just see the English as a bunch of "British" imperialistic aristocrats and it pretty much ends there.

It's probably because Americans still largely hate English people because of the Revolutionary War and English people's dry and sometimes seemingly self-righteous attitude or way of speaking. I personally like British people and find their history interesting - at one point years ago I was even reading about Athelred the Great and those old Anglo-Saxon kings.
But I think a lot of English people give the impression that they're smarter than others particularly Americans - and they do know they're smart people - and it maybe rubs us the wrong way. They are the first people with the English language so they know words and wit a lot better, which also births sarcasm that can seem rude at times. But I still love Brits.
Americans are as ashamed of their English ancestry, as a far-right lune job is ashamed of any hispanic, jewish or black heritage.
I guess this may have its roots in cultural marxism. In conceptions of the world that are based on power dynamics, ie the oppressors and the oppressed. Brits are seen as oppressors. Well honestly having taken part in a musical in which I was required to wear a kilt, and subsequently having recieved glowing recieved glowing reviews from several of the lasses in the pit orchestra below I can understand the desire to claim Scottish heritage if only for the tight to don the tartans. The English on the other hand... well they have Sean Bean. When's the last time you saw a film in which Sean Bean didn't die, although I must admit I do admire Stephen Fry.
I see lots boasting of being English Ancestry where I am. Same goes for a good many in Utah lots and lots of English Ancestry there. Regardless, the United States isn’t just a bunch of people of English Ancestry. I mean, the Midwest is largely of Scandinavian Ancestry. North Carolina has many of Scottish Ancestry. They even have Highland Games in North Carolina and even in a few places in California too. Heck my University (Highlanders) has full Drum & Bagpipe band with most of the streets in the area using Scot land marks for street names. Of course we have a heck of a lot of Hispanics from various parts of the Americas. Boston has lots of Irish. “K Town” has lots of Koreans then there are lots of German/Bavarian towns across the country. Louisiana has its French Quarter. So on and so forth.
My ancestors were Irish Catholic and my surname can be traced to the first Celts who arrived in Ireland. I am proud of my heritage and have antipathy for the British empire and it's treatment of indigenous Irish. I don't even like Anglocentric accents and attitudes.

"Celtic" knotworks & "Celtic" crosses were appropriated from the Anglo-Saxons. Knotworks were historically never Celtic. The celts used la-tenne aesthetics. The Knotworks were associated with Germanic cultural influence & were spread to the Gaels & Picts via trade with the Anglo-Saxons, which is funny because they didn't seem to hate us back then. They certainly did however try to help the vikings & later Normans to conquer England & I guess that came around to bite them in the arse so how they're still bitching about it to this day & blaming the English for what our Norman oppressors did to them (which was far less than what they did to the Anglo-Saxons by the way). @Lliam There are many people of Irish descent in England, and Irish Americans often view English people differently than Irish people in Ireland. People in Ireland do not despise the typical English individual; what they despise is the establishment.

The ideology lingered for longer with the clans in Scotland because they loved in independent clans in the Highlands so we destroyed the clan way of life to wipe out a threat to the British monarchy. Even the jacobites however didn't want to dismantle Britain & merely wished to put a catholic in charge (it was a monarch of Scotland that inherited England who created the British state after all). You'll never hear it from that perspective though because the Celtic bias & propaganda runs strong whereas English people stopped caring for some reason. Lastly going "Orangeman bad" isn't exactly persuading me to your cause. It sounds like you just hate masculine empires & strongmen types.

It may have something to do with how we fought to get awaybfrom thr English in 1776... and then how you guys kidnapped our citizens to force them to be slave soldiers on your ships which led to the War of 1812 where you burned down the White House... I mean, its been a while, so we can be besties again once we do a little house cleaning and impeach the peach, but... we dont really wanna be English. On the plus side, its more popular to be English than German!
I think many Americans think of England as dry (not climate-wise) and dull. I enjoyed visiting there, though it's been many years. The food sucked though.
