One of the stories in British newspapers this week is a girl got sent home from school for wearing an offensive Union Jack flag dress. Students were told to dress up in something that reflected their culture and background. While children of other ethnicities came in their national dress, this British girl slipped on a flag dress and was immediately booted out in case it offended anyone.
So thoughts? Is she a dangerous far right extremist just looking to stir up the race hate shitpile? Was it ridiculous for the school to have an event like this when the English don't have an official national dress? Or is it just the tabloids making a mountain out of a molehill?
Couldn’t she just have worn Amish looking clothes/ old country/ peasant clothes? Like a bonnet and a dress? 👗 or royal clothes
Why not a wig like back in the days? Didn’t the early English settlers in North America wear such clothing. If she didn’t prefer those, why not Victorian style dresses?
I mean, the pride of the uk people with their ancestors primarily relies among their royalty/ royal family. The clothes of the common people were pants, shirts, coats and dresses, and then that just evolved with time. Changing in length, colors, designs. But ultimately the same concept.
I feel she could’ve had multiple options because of this, but since no one would outright know which she represented, she just went with a direct flag as an outfit. Which isn’t terrible, and yet it isn’t quite historically/ geographically accurate. Cause the uk people don’t wear the flag on their bodies all over the country. 🤷♀️ 🤔
I’d say wearing this outfit isn’t offensive or symbolic of hate. So any possible ambiguity or negatively implied/assumed message can be overlooked.

I'm British and yes I can verify it's a true story. And completely ridiculous even offensive to British people for the school to act that way towards a dress that is cultural, national and in no way offensive that I can tell. The school should recieve a lot of boycotting and hate until they apologise and grovel completely!

If it was ultra revealing or had an inappropriate symbol or something then I can see controversy and a possible need to step in, though this alone is a nothing burger.

Students were told to dress up in something that reflected their culture and background. It looks like she did exactly what was asked. On top of that, the dress is tasteful and attractive. I'll bet she thought the dress was really cool. I can't see anything offensive about it. It perfectly reflects her cultural heritage. Booting her out reflects a treasonous, anti-British attitude. It was a grievous injustice. I hope the school gets sued and those involved in the decision get fired from their jobs and pilloried in public.
It is a sign of the extreme devotion to PC and woke culture in the UK. The girl deserves an apology, as there is no sin in being proud of your country. If that offends someone else, they can eat shit and die.
There have been things with the union jack on them for decades, it's one of the most recognisable flags in the world.

White population varies across the UK. In Wales and Scotland it's about 97%, (99.99 in a most parts) most of England is 80 to 95%. London is 65%. Where you have to be careful is there are a lot of other white nationalities living in the UK who obviously don't identify as white British in surveys. Yes there are places granny will say "oooh it's like a game of spot the white man" but these are just small neighbourhoods and despite what the far right will tell you, far from typical.
I don't know where you got those figures from but they're wrong.

Of course you're in your ivory tower, and of course where you live, everybody is white. I wish you could live in my town which is 30% non-white. We have a Muslim enclave which spans a good mile. I wish you could come and live here to see the kind of utopia that has been created. Balkanisation isn't indication that a particular policy, if you could call it that, is working. You also have to factor in the fact that the oldest generation tends to be white. When the oldest generation die out, the ones that do so in the next 20 years, those figures will shift dramatically.
I reiterate, the UK is projected to be majority non-white in 40 years time.
I mean, you can make the argument that it doesn't matter. But don't deny the meat and bones of the statistics.

Offensive? In the U. S. I don't know that a dress that is a spin off the flag would be considered offensive. I think it's a great dress and it certainly shows she's patriotic about Britain.

Not so related but I recall how UK flag was once part of a popular trend in fashion, when I was 20. In France. You were seeing that flag on backpacks, jackets, bags and things. I supposed Brits would have found this fashion rather strange. I surely would find it strange if the french flag was used as fashion in foreign countries lol

The dress is just a thing. It’s not intrinsically offensive. I choose to not be offended. That’s not a difficult choice in this case. Despite knowing too little about it, i suspect it’s an unnecessary fiasco. The child is young and this was a brilliant educational opportunity for everyone involved. Instead it has become political rage bait. Ell oh ell!
It was actually "diversity days". Students were encouraged to wear clothing from their culture to showcase Britain's cultural diversity. Some kids who donned the English and Welsh flag were also sent home, but everyone else including burqa clad girls were permitted.

The school is being ridiculous for saying that her dress might offend someone. If it does offend someone remove that individual from the country, why they living somewhere they are offended by the country's own flag.
If you are going to be all inclusive then you have to include all no matter how offensive to some. Personally I like the dress, not something I would wear but I like it…..
