Would anyone trust US military recruitment now?

For those who do not already know, the US Airforce is currently kicking out trans service members who has served up to 18 years without giving them early retirement and stripping benefits. And all this because one president during their long service to the United States disagreed with their identity and making a decision that will most likely be reverted later or even challenged in court.

The problem however is that this is a stinging betrayal of peoples trust in all branches of the military. If a random politician can at any time strip you of everything that you have sacrificed for and leave you in the dirt, why would anyone sign up at this point? There is obviously no respect here and if the government has anything to say about it then you are not even entitled to what you were promised.

I believe this will be a stain on US military history that will taint both the reputation and lower recruitment for the rest of my life. In a way it is perhaps ironic that it is the Republicans who has been concerned about the military recruitment rates in recent history. Well, I think that ship has probably sailed at this point.

But what do you think, how is public trust in the military going to change from this?

Ok, I'm speaking here as a veteran. Yes you're right the current administration's behavior regarding trans people is awful. That said the number of trans people in the military is very low and I doubt it will have a significant recruiting impact.

Next issue, trusting a recruiter is always an iffy proposition. On top of being a veteran, my father was a recruiter. Recruiters will not lie outright, but they will mislead the hell out of you. Always remember that when a recruiter says "you can" it should be followed by the words, "but you probably won't". Damn near every kid joining the Army today thinks he/she is going to become a warrant officer and fly helicopters. About .00009 percent of them will. When we were losing 6-10 a week in Vietnam it was a lot easier.

That brings up one thing to always remember, the purpose of the military is to kill people and break things. Often when you shoot at people, they get irritated and shoot back.

All this said, you can do very well in the military. I did, partly because because of guidance from my dad, partly blind luck, partly timing. It's a gamble and each person has to judge the risk for themselves.

What do you think journalists are? They are the news version of scientists. They function as a fairly reliable source of information and they perform their own investigations to make sure that the information they publish is accurate.
