A lot is the proliferation of outlets producing movies and TV shows. There are so many actors portraying characters now that it's harder to stand out. That and so many celebrities shit posting about killing Trump or burning down the white house or holding Trumps bloody head up on camera. In the past they weren't right there on X in everyone's face showing their true colors. Turns out they're not nice or respectable people. A huge percentage of it is as also as simple as get woke, go broke. No one cares about things like the Oscars now. It's just some weird dude up there in a dress and a bunch of communist ranting about "climate change" or some other shit. No one is going to accept you being "gay" or "trans" or any of that shit, you just look crazy to people, it looks like disease and people are put off. Other weird shit is causing it to , all their children just happen to be "trans" as well, every time you turn around some sick bitch has her little boys in dresses. You want to puke thinking about how these vile people must live. There was an innocence to the 20th century that no longer exists. The world was smaller back then, simpler. Now everyone has a computer in his pocket powerful enough to run a small country.
This is a great question and I think the answer is yes.
Being the age I am and having a long perspective I can see how the change came.
Back in the day you had far fewer choices to access entertainment. You had TV, with only a few channels, the movies in a theater, musical concerts and radio. There was no Internet, no social media, no 500 channels to watch on TV. So you were not hit with a constant barrage of millions of choices of what to watch.
That limited the number of "celebrities." There were a couple of dozen men and a couple of dozen women, a few dozen musical acts, who got the parts to play and that was it. There weren't thousands of celebrities competing for your attention. Each one of them was a novelty and there were limited opportunities to even see them. So that drove up their celebrity value. Mystery was part of the celebrity appeal. All celebrities are just ordinary people but what makes them larger than life is the mystery that surrounds them.
Today there are literally thousands of "celebrities." They are everywhere you turn... a dime a dozen. That takes a lot of the novelty out of it. Too much of anything gets boring and less exciting and entertaining. And you can easily see them any time you want. No more mystery, there are a million outlets for their appearance.
Not only that but its all been done before. There isn't anything new in the music industry, it's all been done. The best you can find is a minor variation on things that have already been done a million times. Because of the modern age of communication, even young people have seen it all before. So nothing seems new and exciting about "celebrity" anymore.
I think these things are a major reason why celebrity culture is not so much of a thing anymore.
Yea because a lot of people are living paycheck to paycheck and people are dying or struggling to survive. But the celebs are complaining, getting into trouble, making bad decisions, flaunting their wealth, going to extreme events, and then asking the public to donate and support this or them.
The pandemic was a huge wake up call & shift. More people want to see people work their way up and be in touch with the community not disappear when they're famous or act like they're different because their rich.
Now if we talk about celebs it's basically because of the drama around them or they're about to do a new project.
No, but to many US celebs sold them out. As a celeb you need to keep your political affiliation for yourself

What ever celebrity culture is... Is entirely arbitrary in the eyes of the public. It is always our perspective and expectations of them influencing their public persona. So it will always change. There will always be entertainers. The societal impact and the public perception is always fluid. But since the Roman gladiators pretty consistent.
Social media sort of demystified it. Then people like Jonny Depp 💩...
No, people have no lives and live vicariously through these morons.
I think it is changing because social media has made people think that 5,000 followers will make you a celebrity. .
only in conservative spaces. celebrity culture is still alive and well in liberal spaces
I'm trying to care and failing.
I think yes because of social media
