Charlie Kirk, an influential figure in conservative politics known for mobilizing young voters and who was close to President Donald Trump, died Wednesday after being shot at an event in Orem, Utah, according to Trump. He was 31.
Kirk was speaking at Utah Valley University as part of Turning Point USA’s first event on a tour of college campuses. The university said in a statement that a single gun shot was fired at the event. A spokesperson for the University told the New York Times that there is no suspect currently in custody for Kirk’s shooting. An earlier statement from the school reported that a suspect had been taken into detained, but was determined not to be the shooter. Utah Valley University locked down its campus and cancelled classes for the remainder of the day, the school announced.

2K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. First I am not an American to be clear.
To be clear whilst I thought Charlie Kirk was a excellent debater, I did not think his reasoning was necessarily superlative. It was however much superior to those who chose to challenge him.
He always played the ball not the man. I'm not sure if that is just an Aussie idiom but it means making injuring your opponent the objective of the game. In a political setting it is to vilify an opponent rather than cogently counter an argument.
Vilification has always been part of Left wing politics from inception. Marx was very good at it; he and Engels would chortle over their 'bombs'. Violence was part of their politics also with them organizing an attempted assassination.
More than anything I am disturbed at how the Left - globally not just in the US - is reaching reaching back into it's violent past. I won't attempt to justify here but Facism and National Socialism were Left wing political philosophy along with Lenin/Stalin communism.
It was extremely disturbing to see the US Left regretting only the inaccuracy of Butler and the incompetence of the second attempt. Not to mention violent destruction of property.
All without shame or remorse.

3 moI see this as another tragic preventable death caused by the hands of a hateful, spiteful, pathetic loser as I do with all political violence and all gun violence victims in the country.
We have an epidemic of mental health, gun violence, political violence, and too many crisis situations that need to be addressed and fixed.
There were multiple failures of Utah Leadership. I heard there wasn’t enough security , there wasn’t enough patrolling , there wasn’t enough making sure the roof access was closed off or have a guard on standby , and he was out in the open.
There was even a failure to capture the right suspect, I think they put into custody two people of interest though the killer is still out there. It is a disgrace.Charlie Kirk was a young , conservative , white , male with a prominent future ahead of him in political scene especially among young white men saying their conservative talking points in a way that no one else did. You are allowed to speak out , say opinions , peaceful and patriotically make your voice heard however rioting, shooting, killing, death threats, plotting and scheming aren’t ways to solve nothing. Rest in peace to Charlie Kirk.
We need to come together on this and admit there have been sh—tings at Synagogues, Churches, Night Clubs and Gay Bars, Las Vegas Strip, Schools, College Campuses, Journalists, and Political Figures, etc.
It has no place in America and we can fix it if we come together.
The more we drag our heels, the worse it will get. We need to lower the temperature on both sides, pass legislation, be willing to hear and see one another’s perspective, and be able to fix the mental health crisis too. We have the data and we have the know how, let us begin to fix it so, no one is a victim of gun violence or political violence ever again.
Let Charlie Kirk be the last and not let his death be in vain.512 Reply- 3 mo
@MisterWack You said it better than I could ever say it. Thinking about what I was doing at 31, I was just beginning to "live', and the thought of dying at that age is just brain numbing, especially in view of what he was trying to do and achieve.

@Bricealan except he could have emphasized skin color a bit less.

@Hardon-Collider Well, you see? Right, there is good reason to murder the man! Are you a person of color?

@Bricealan "Charlie Kirk was a young , conservative , white , male with a prominent future ahead of him in political scene especially among young white men saying their conservative talking points in a way that no one else did."
why?
white man, white men. why need to do this? - 3 mo
@Bricealan I’m not even 31 and I empathize with that.
- 3 mo
@Hardon-Collider The idea was to highlight the victim. We have seen victims of all backgrounds and political affiliations at night clubs to schools to universities to graduations to Las Vegas Strip.
This can and will happen to anyone unless we take a stand. - 3 mo
@Syntosi AI Generated? AI Generated? Do you want me to break it down piece by piece of my exact brainstorming process and letting the words flow?
I highlighted Charlie Kirk as an individual (white, young, conservative, male) to highlight to those mourning the loss to push towards a bigger discussion which I have done in previous answers, posts, etc. on this platform of GAG. Then I attached that reference towards not only did this cause an innocent death, there is a bigger epidemic of gun violence that needs to be addressed like Las Vegas Strip shooting, Gay Bar shooting, Synagogues, Churches, College Campuses, and Schools even Political Rallies so we should find common ground to fix the situation.
This gun culture and this radicalized extremism high temperature rhetoric is causing massive harm in this country fueled by a mental health crisis too. This is dangerous, we are playing with fucking fire.
I want Charlie Kirk to be the last victim of gun violence, not just another victim. And last victim of political violence. In America anything is possible when Democrats and Republicans come together to fix the issues, I want a solution. You can read my other reactions, it isn’t AI. - 3 mo

silencing someone just for stating their own opinions is just WRONG. silencing someone for wanting a healthy debate and to see their views is WRONG. i don't care which side you're on. that is WRONG. to just end someones life, in front of their family, their small children, and a bunch of college aged kids is sick.
and people really need to stop taking his quotes out of context. if you're going to be posting quotes and criticizing him, at least post the whole entire quote AND the context of the quotes.
and it is not lost on me that on the same day there was a school shooting that i also cared about. and hearing about the train stabbing in charlotte. this needs to stop.
i feel like i am still silenced on this issue simply because i don't want to lose friends because of it. and honestly, maybe i don't want to be their friend if they think it's okay to celebrate someones assassination that never did anything harmful.
if you're celebrating someones death just because they have a different opinion than you and weren't afraid to speak up about it, you need to really go look in the mirror and think about who you are as a person. because that is just straight up evil.

3 moThere is supposedly another suspect in the pipeline in some manner or other.
But, no one should be shot and killed no matter what opinions they espouse, or whether I like their opinions, politics or not.
But will the shooter ever be found? The ID of him I heard on NPR this morning was sketchy at best: white tennis, black T shirt and pants, and "college aged." Very vague.
Law enforcement is staying mum on who, what and where, it seems, so they can close on in this person. If no one is caught in the next week or so, I wonder if anyone will be.
My guess is this person who did this has no record of any crimes of any kind. No fingerprints on file. Nothing. And has disappeared like the wisp of smoke that he was.00 Reply

3 moDidn't he once say that deaths from gun violence are an acceptable sacrifice for their 2nd amendment rights?
540 Reply- 3 mo
Ah, that makes him an acceptable sacrifice for the 2nd Amendment, then, if people believe his words. I have read what he has said on race, and I was not happy about what he preached. On race, he targeted Blacks and made then appear inferior. This man had a slot of explaining to do when he meets his Maker.
- 3 mo
Kirk wasn't a "conservative," but an overt racist and white supremacist, spreading scare stories about marauding black bucks threatening to r*pe virginal white broads (was he actually born in EIGHTEEN NINETY-THREE, not 1993?), allegedly dumb black folk getting jobs through DEI, affirmative action and other gambits (because the only jobs we're qualified for are maid, butler and other jobs serving white folk) and other red meat trope meant to scare whites into supporting a return to old-style Jim Crow. That said, slaying even this POS is beyond the pale, as his vileness had no true effect on lives.
- 3 mo
You clearly don’t understand the point he was making because you aren’t bright. But allow me to use an example to make it so easy a 5 year old can understand.
Do people die from cars? Yes. Right, so what he is saying is that allowing people to drive vehicles comes at the risk of people not only killing themselves with them but also kill others.
As for guns, there are bad people regardless if guns exist or not. Case in point a man STABBED a woman to death on a train. He did not use a gun. Violence is the key. And malicious intent. Allowing people to have guns gives the possibility of good people to react and stop a bad person from using a gun to kill others, how? By using a gun. - 3 mo
@Danny_dan92 Him dying doesn't make that anology any less ridiculous.
- 3 mo
@Vegasrunner
Are drugs illegal? - 3 mo
@Danny_dan92 Depends on the drug, the location of the drug and how it is being distributed.
- 3 mo
Ok fair, I’ll be more specific. Schedule one drugs. Such as meth, crack cocaine, heroin
- 3 mo
@Danny_dan92 I can't speak about meth because I don't know anything about the drug Heroin is legal in designated zones in The state of Oregon and Washington. If I understand coacaine is illegal, however the penalties for it being used in cracks form is different.
- 3 mo
Right so the reason why I ask is because can we agree that even though these drugs are completely illegal or are illegal in some areas, that people still get their hands on them somehow?
- 3 mo
@Danny_dan92 Not sure how thats relevant. Illegal Drugs users by definition use the drugs on themselves, Illegal Gun users use guns on other people. Common sense (which I'm not making the argument that the average right wing American has) would say that higher restrictions should be placed on instruments that can be used to inflict injury to someone else vs something that can only be used to inflict injury on the user. I don't see what the big deal is anyway, if the guy had no problem w/ children, and African American leaders getting slaughtered in the name of the 2nd amendment we should have any problem w/ him taking a few bullets for the same cause?
- 3 mo
Can a drug addict sell drugs to people that can kill them?

@Danny_dan92 That point despite from being factually untrue is irrelevant to shooting of a man who openly advocated for shootings.
- 3 mo
How was he openly advocating for shootings?
- 3 mo
@Vegasrunner to be fair, saying that gun violence is an inevitable consequence of protecting the 2nd amendment, isn’t exactly “advocating for shootings.”
- 3 mo
Exactly. What he was saying is that unfortunately bad people get their hands on guns and do bad things. So allowing good people to get access to guns, by extension allows those people to stop bad actors.

3 moThis is reprehensible. I don't care that I didn't agree with him politically or socially... He was 31 years old, had a wife and kids, and didn't deserve this. Lunatics on the far left and the far right that don't represent the majority of either of us have got to stop with this taking matters into their own hands business... VIA MURDER. Whether it be right wing political activists like Charlie or a democratic senator... There is zero excuse for this. We don't know who killed Charlie yet but it would be very probable the person that did it had opposing views to him. If that is true. That person is not a representative of anyone on the left that understands it's ideologies as is the same for the radical folks on the right doesn't represent avg conservative or Republican voters.
Both sides need to condemn the behavior of these radicals. Going on TV calling it a democrat act of war is so careless and only going to incite other crazy people to act.
If you don't have empathy for Charlie or his family because you didn't agree with him then you are part of the problem. It can't be empathy for me not for thee.
We can't let the norm be.. I don't like what you're saying... so now I'll kill you.
This is horrific and I'm so sorry and upset this happened to him.
10 Reply 1.9K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Pretty tired of it. I grew up seeing the hateful, wrongful demonization of people on the right. "Sexist, racist, homophpbic, transphobic, supremacist, xenophobe, nazi, fascist." And I've been saying the entire time this leads to violence. You start with a level of decency and sympathy for those acting in ignorance, but you lose that after nearly 2 decades of warning them. These people on the left think they want this, but they don't. And at this point, I don't care. You guys did this to yourself.
And to nearly all of you who didn't advocate for this, most of you saw it brewing and you said nothing. Frankly, most of you didn't mind because these vile people were who voted along side you, so it was worth keeping a tight lip, huh? Political tension is rising, families left childless, fatherless, and motherless. And that can't be undone. There's a glimmer of hope that the light shed on this case might wake people up to where we're headed. But statistically speaking, the countless warnings the left has been given throughout my entire life, I'm not banking on them changing now.20 ReplyKirk offended both sides of the political spectrum. He got some things correct like calling out trannies for being mentally ill, but got other things wrong. For instance putting Jewlandia before America. And then there is his debating style. He debated college students who weren't well versed in the topic and weren't good at public speaking. Moreover, he always set them up using if/then logic statements. Anyone who has taken a critical thinking or logic course will tell you the limits of using if/then statements.
The end result of Kirk's assassination is that it's going to galvanize people, not just the Left, but people who don't identify via the Left/Right paradigm to take serious actions against communists, the Left, et al. For instance, I predict that anyone wearing a Che shirt will be denied service, expelled from university, and ostracized. Anyone promoting communist ideas will be denied employment. Any business who employees such people will have to better screen psychotic employees who espouse any of this nonsense if they want to stay in business. Ultimately, the environment will become so hostile that liquidation of the Left will happen.
In regards to communists cheering Kirk's death, this is common and expected in warfare. America did this at the end of WW2. Look at how people reacted at the death of Osama bin Laden in May 2012 - people were out in the streets cheering. I know if all these Jewlandia Firsters were taken out, I'm not crying over their deaths. I'm going about my business. So to anyone claiming, "Oh it's not nice to celebrate someone's death." You need to around, it's common and I'm sure these same people would be cheering if Biden died in office.

@I_Can_Help Results of recent strict gun control laws in Wa state known for extreme liberal views. In Washington state, 2024 saw a significant increase in crimes against society, including drug and firearms violations, a 31% surge compared to 2023, according to a KOMO News report. 3 moI think Charlie Kirks debating style was dog shit, his arguments terrible and he was really never listening and insteads always gravitating around his talking points independend of what the other person said. so really his debate style didn't need another person to be there. that being said he was a loving father of 2 children and husband, who decided to be in the public eye, as a professional choice and i don't think that any of his shit arguments justified what happened to him. this was a cruel act of violence against an innocent and undeserving victim. you can disagree all you want like i do. nothing of it justified what happened.
09 Reply- 3 mo
i guess the only thing that i find somewhat inappropriately funny is that his death is a morbidly ironic proof for the falsehood of his own argument, that everyone having weapons is a good thing.
- 3 mo
@marish01 it doesn't matter for the fact that killing someone for having that opinion is absolutely not justifyable.
- 3 mo
@marish01 you should particularly listen to the arguments the other side is making and you should see if he's even addressing their arguments. because many times he seems to have his talking points pretty much on rails and it doesn't even matter what the other person is saying, cause he's gonna play his broken rekord either way. also you should really fact check everything he says cause a huge part of it is plain out wrong.
- 3 mo
@marish01 www.youtube.com/watch here's a good video pointing the flaws out. i do not disagree with "everything" he says but since his factual accuracy is quite low, i rather don't make opinions based on what he's saying.

I have listened to many of his debates. He is good at debating.
https://youtu.be/tZUrBpNle20?si=TGNWzzbU3-QxsX2O - 3 mo
@marish01 he is good at debates. cause his debating strategie is basically steering any debate back to the few talking point he has and then quoting "facts" that often aren't actually true for his position. like even here he says a lot of things that are not factually correct. i highly advise you to listen to what he says word for word. identify any claims he's making that appeal to "known facts" and then google that shit. you have a high likelyhood of finding something that's not correct very quickly.
and you know why he got so popular? cause the people watching his videos don't usually do that. but that's not him exclusively. that's the same with many celebritis that have a reputation of being good in arguing or debates. they can only be good as long as nobody checks if they're actually saying the truth.
I feel terribly sad. Nobody should ever be murdered for their political views, and as I stated in another post, I think the political consequences of this and America are going to be absolutely catastrophic.

A lot of people have been losing their job, getting fired, getting terminated for laughing, cheering, making fun of it etc. I have seen videos of people using the song Celebration by Kool & The Gang pertainingto Charlie's death, using a megaphone to say how they got him in the neck, say they won't waste good beer on him etc. On top of tgat many on the left want police officers to be killed by way of guns and want Donald Trump dead and anyone who voted for Trump to be dead. Many on the left are proud the Christian girls drowned in the Texas flood and that many are missing. The left are a vile group.
00 ReplyPeople who think this is going to work are morons. Leaving aside the obvious immorality and illegality of the situation.
Political violence in America doesn't work; did left wingers stop because people killed melissa hortman, NO.
Did it work when Brian Thompson was killed or president Trump was nearly killed, no it did not.
This does not work, so even if you take the argument seriously that 'he was causing harm' and he needed to go away... guess what... this doesn't even accomplish the goal... plenty of people like him will be around and will likely be all the more motivated to speak out.
You've accomplished nothing in stopping these ideas.
00 Replyi didn't feel any different than when I've heard someone else got killed. i happened to go on x a couple of minutes after the video was released. i saw the close up of the blood pouring from his neck. i knew he was dead. it appeared the bullet did damage to his spinal cord as well due to the paralysis of his hand although i could be wrong. i personally believe the fate of all of this hyper capitalist societies has been sealed for a long time, as a guy who has read a book or two on ancient roman society, i can tell you political assassinations run rampant in failing societies.

It's terrible, he paid the price because he was a good and unique man who truly deserved the best, but some of the people who are demons in their nature wanted him to die because he is making the world a better place and they do not deserve him at all, one day someone will laugh on their graves reminding them about their laughs and celebrations for this man's death!

3 moI don't think anyone deserves to die that way, through gun violence. But I think his assassination is very very ironic. Other than feeling bad for his children, to have to be raised without a father, I don't feel much sympathy for the man himself beyond that though.
10 Reply I mean I don’t really care personally. I feel bad for his family; his parents lost their kid, his wife lost her husband and his kids lost his dad, but otherwise I’m unaffected. Though it is ironic given his stance on guns that that is what ended him. And to be clear I feel the same way about the CEOs that are being taken out too.

I didn't like really anything he stood for but he was 31, had life to live, to learn from, hopefully evolve, and be there for his kids. That opportunity was taken away from him because someone decided to take his (even if you don't like) lawful first amendment free speech, and kill him over expressing himself. - 3 mo
That's optics. Because if I break this down, you also deserve to die by your own logic.
I don't believe that man and woman are equal. By liberal logic that would make me a misogynist and I deserve to die.
I believe that being gay Is a sin, by your logic that would make me a homophobe and I deserve to die
I don't believe that somebody should be hired because of the color of their skin. You would say that makes me racist and I deserve to die.
So when you follow your logic to its normal conclusion, you're literally murdering people for views that were common sense 10 years ago. You don't even realize that you are the ones that came up with these extremes and then called everybody Nazis for not believing in the same extremes. Funny enough you guys are the ones that would like to kill Jews. But we're the Nazi?
So that's why I said your cowards at the end of the day because you just want to silence people that have a different opinion. Well good luck killing 70% of the population. The majority of people don't support the things you guys believe in.

@Danny_dan92 What’s POETIC is you fabricating a paragraph about me, which you completely made up. I’m neither “justifying the killing of one” nor have I ever “urged others to sympathize” with any cause connected to Gaza—so yes, you did just “imagine” your weird reply.
- 3 mo
You labeled it poetic justice. So yes, you are trying to justify the killing to reduce it’s impact and significance.
I wonder, would you feel the same way if it was a democratic politician? Probably not.
And that’s the point I’m ultimately making. You’re clearly biased based on political affiliation. And that’s sickening.
I sympathize death regardless who they are. I don’t say “poetic justice” with the exception of people who kill innocent people getting killed themselves.
And I’m pretty sure that Charlie Kirk didn’t kill people. No. He simply talked to them. And he was killed for doing so.

Name a country with strict gun laws and I'll show you countless murders that happened despite it.
Taking away someone's gun doesn't make them not murder, it changes how they'll murder.
France has strict gun laws and in Nice France a guy went on a killing spree driving over people with a truck. He killed 86 people and injured nearly 500 (way more than the average "mass shooting").
I think often times people react defensively without taking a response into consideration. So please, think about this. - 3 mo

Here is an article that details some of Japan's mass killings from 1995 to 2008. Including arson that killed 18, a guy running over people with a truck then exiting the vehicle and stabbing people (7 died), and guy who broke into a handicapped faciliti6 and stabbed 19 disabled people to death.
https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN1UD1UN/
And this one isn't s specific case, but I'll throw it in because it talks about why mass murders are on the rise in Japan:
https://www.nippon.com/en/in-depth/d00790/
I could go on but I think I've made my point and I obviously can't just spend all of my day researching this, I obviously have things to do.
But as you can see, their strict gun laws did not stop any of these murders. As I already stated, gun laws do not stop murder. They change how some murder is done. People are not safer, they are just killed differently.
And I don't know if you just didn't read all of my comment but asking how many were deaths by gun violence completely misses the point. I am making the assertion that guns laws creating less gun deaths does not create less murder, it changes how that murder is enacted. So saying "but they're not gun deaths" is irrelevant. And it's also, frankly, silly. Who cares if they're not gun deaths if they're still murders. Nobody has a friend, family, or colleague die and then is relieved when they hear it wasn't a gun death. It doesn't matter if it was a gun, knife, fire, or strangulation. Someone died. - 3 mo
