-Our founding fathers understood a good deal of this and that is why they built so many safeguards into the system so it would never take either extreme. They had experienced the tyranny of a King and the inequity of an Aristocracy. The electoral college's original purpose was to make sure that the voting public made intelligent choices and did not wreck the system. What is happening now is just the usual swing that occurs every time a political party can't live up to it campaign promises. Opinions change when the presiding officer does the same thing that he accused his opponent of doing.

Okay... So there are two socialists where there used to be two generic Demo (n) crats, in deep blue areas... Having watched enough Shoe0nHead, I think it might be for the better, really. The socialists might be ignorant about the economy, but at least they are not calling for mass murder of those they disagree with (unlike communists and generic Demo (n) crats). Also, since this is happening in deep blue areas, there is no "rise of socialism" to be concerned about. If anything, the left-wing voters might be moving from the "kill everyone who disagrees with me" stance to a more relaxed stance, like "okay, so we don't believe in personal freedom, but maybe we should at least force something that sounds good on others instead of just shaming them for existing?"
