Italy makes it illegal to kill women. Is this a good or bad thing?

The Italian parliament has unanimously voted to make femicide a specific criminal offence with a guaranteed life sentence. While murder has long been a crime in Italy, the new ruling means automatic stiffer sentences if you kill some because they're a woman.

So is this a good idea that should be extended to other countries? I think with all the misogyny I see on here it's long over due in America.

Well, I'm really not sure if it's good or bad. I mean, we learn as kids that killing is wrong so they make it illegal to demonstrate it I guess but then it's legal to kill the person who did the illegal killing unless maybe it was during war when killing is made legal under some conditions but sometimes the conditions aren't all that clear and I've really been very confused about all this since I have been very young when I also heard that God said it was wrong to kill but it's ok to wipe out the entire planet in a flood every once in awhile.

First of all, doesn't that just right off the bat sound like something that's going to make the situation worse? Like before logic even comes into play, just... How could you not intuitively know "oh, that's going to make the divide much worse and make our children see the world in a way that's illogical and unpredictable."

I don't know what sort of planet you just arrived from. but on planet earth where i grew up on, killing people was illegal for all my life, my parents life and my grandparents lifes. women are people. so killing women has been illegal for a very long time and i think calling a murder of a woman a "femizide" to then claim that this only now being specifically forbidden means women were just allowed to legally murder before that point in time is just idiotic in my opinion. like if you think killing a person "because they are some gender" makes a difference, then i hate to break it to you: you're a sexist. sorry. it is what it is.

Was it legal before? I thought murder was already illegal. Outlawing "femicide" outside of murder in general will only put women in the spotlight more. And given that a lot of them are horrible people (think Amber Heard), some men might be like "they are getting additional protection, it means they are plotting something horrible" and commit "femicide" anyway, believing it's self-defense. Also, as if there were not enough reasons to hate feminists so far, getting women special treatment like this will awaken even more people to the fact that feminism is about privileges for women and not any kind of "equality", posing an even bigger threat to women.

There are stiff enough sentences for murder, no matter who it's perpetrated against. Let juries decide how punishment will be divvied. It's not about the sex of who's been killed, it's about the why of the killer. That decides punishment.

Don't know what's been happening in Italy, but Italy is not America or anywhere else. They must have reasons why their law got passed.

Uh, isn't it illegal to kill anybody, regardless of gender? (Except in cases of self-defense, of course). If not, it certainly should be. And I also question, if murdering a woman carries a mandatory life sentence, why shouldn't the murder of a man carry the same penalty? Is one gender supposedly more valuable than the other?

I am Italian, and many people in my country, including many women, believe this law to be unconstitutional. A woman's life is no more valuable than a man's. Murder is a serious crime regardless of the victim's gender and the motive, especially if there is intent.
