Here’s my question. Should immigrants keep their jobs and citizenship if they don’t understand English.

I was at my local Walmart the other day and I needed something from a case that was locked and I say a Walmart employee in that section who was helping someone in the same case I needed to get something out of. I asked them to get something for me and the employee just looked at me turned and left and started to talk to another employee and I went to them both and asked said I needed something from a case. They both just looked at me confused and not understanding me. They just started talking to each other.

I did not understand what language they were speaking in and I was confused because I thought you had to speak and understand English to work in customer service and interaction with customers.

So should employees who are immigrants loose there jobs and citizenship for something like it.

Not necessarily. Store owners should know their market. When i walk into the little Mexican grocery store that sells the best salsa, i always ask in English because my Spanish is inadequate. Sometimes they don’t understand and we have to muddle through the language barrier with hand gestures and patience. They take my money and it always ends with a polite smile on both sides of the counter. And the salsa is definitely worth it.
There are dozens of good reasons to never shop at Walmart again. If it bothers you that much, don’t shop there. It’s called ‘voting with your wallet’. Shop in stores where you’re treated with respect. But know that the eventuality is you will be shopping entirely online. Paying their productive employees is considered by most corporations to be their biggest mitigable expense. Having ZERO customer interactions with AI & robots doing all of the work is the end goal. It always has been. “Self checkout” has been around for decades and has been rapidly gaining in popularity.
So shop at small, local shops with people who can communicate with you effectively, appreciate your business and respect you as a neighbor. Otherwise, stop b*tching. Walmart is far and away the largest and most despicable retailer on the planet. Every dollar you spend there is you voting for their business model.

See where I'm getting at and see you're in a wal mart? Just order pick up on your phone. I've been calling the alarm for robot dark stores for a decade now. That grocery store was made to be a giant vending machine since the 90's for the future. Why is the ceiling so god damn high?

All the "anti theft" precautions, shorting cashier staffing, raising prices in disguised as inflation. Making the instore shopping experience as miserable as possible and then transition into dark store pick up only stores. Dropping the prices minimally while all the most expensive cost go to zero.

Back to your original point I guess. Hmm historically they work there after a year or two and pick up English. Everyone starts somewhere.

I actually encountered that in Walmart 2 summers ago… thanks for the reminder… i was so confused at first.
well… it’s Walmart … they are one of the biggest in the country and they do not care about our complains… this kind of hiring was done by the previous administration…

I have no problem with Walmart or any company hiring immigrants… since I myself is an immigrant… but with all the jobs I had… I had to learn the language in order to do the job.
so hire immigrants, trained them at lease a few sentences.. who can stock shelves etc… but able to direct a walkie to call someone to help a customer. Or wear a name tag that says I only speak …. Language… I am learning English with a happy 😃. You know… this is America 🇺🇸

They may not be immigrants. People can be born in the US and just never learn how to speak English if they live in an insular community. This can be a means of control, it's often used on women to prevent them from turning up like us wicked western women.

i don't think you should lose a visa for not being able to speak English, I don't think it should be requited to learn English.

I don't get the logic of hiring people who can't speak English, and I don't get the logic of living in a country when you don't speak the language. Also could they not just take out a phone and talk to google translate? Maybe they weren't allowed to take out their phone.. You could have used your phone to translate.

In the US they are required to know some English to become citizens. I don't know how much "some" is though. I think there is an oral interview in English to qualify for citizenship.

Having said that, there is a need for non-English speakers in retail and many other sectors. But they shouldn't make it difficult to find an employee who speaks English.

To answer your actual question, no they should not lose their jobs. Or at least it's up to the company to decide what their needs are.

It doesn't matter if they speak your language, what matters is they are cheap and can be easily deported if they are sick or too old for wage slaving. That's why they have higher value for employers than Americans who demand social security and other frivolities which don't generate profits.

No, then why you don't work there?
Even in my country imigrants don't talk even English, so the native language is out of question.
But nobady care about thous jobs so the economy need to keep wokring.
Deport only people who are racist and have no brain to understand the imigrants are an important part of any country.
I never ask to be born in a poor country and learn naturaly a non international laguage.
Is a privilage to be born in develop and rich and safe county!

The real question is how does a foreigner who doesn't speak English and probably has no checkable work history outcompete the locals to get the job? All I can think of is the local population must be unemployable.

They may have been being paid far below minimum wage, someone became a manager of the store and employed a bunch of his own family. We call that Nepotism

If they are citizens and their employer has no problem hiring somebody that cannot speak English , it is a free country and it is not against the law to do so. They should stay employed.
