Well, in the 1970s, we had something called "quadraphonic sound". Supposedly, it was the best stereo type to have for accurately playing recordings. Basically, it was "surround sound" before surround sound existed.

Sadly, quadraphonic sound was expensive and complicated so it was really something of a fad among stereo fans (*), like 8-track tapes, so it disappeared.

(*) I used to subscribe to a magazine called Stereo Review and I learned about all sorts of stereo types then.
