TV's were better when they weren't "smart." Agree or disagree?

I’m on the fence. Obviously i’m not a fan of being spied on by the tech companies, but they’re doing that through everything now anyway. TVs are the least of those issues.
Smart TVs are just giving users more control over accessibility. Especially in areas with media monopolies, that’s a very good thing. Most areas had only one cable company. Then satellite became direct competitors, but most areas only had one satellite option. Direct access to the internet through their televisions gives people options unlike anything we’ve had before. Suddenly cable companies can “bundle” TV with your home phone and internet for a third of what cable or satellite used to cost alone? C’mon! Almost anything that crumbles sanctioned monopolies is a good thing. Smart TVs had a hand in that.

Disagree. Oh, I love reading the Republican view that it's the "TV's who are invading your privacy, but not the government." Of course, the R's will say it's the D's who are spying on you and violating the rights of the Constitution they don't believe in anyway. LOL What a shitshow. And I like my smart TV. I know how to keep it from acting like a transmitter.

Lol. It has nothing to do with feeling like I'm being spied on. I just felt that the practicality was better, and the TV was easier to navigate. I'm not super tech savvy if I'm just being honest with myself

They were easier because there were less options. But the biggest complaints about them these days are that they can be used as a camera to spy on you in your home, and they actually could be used that way. Scary, I know.

Never give your TV router access unless for a firmware update but don't forget to remove passwords after. Of course if you want use streaming services those TV will phone home. An option is router firewall that blocks certain IP ranges for this specific devices. You can figure those IP ranges out with wireshark or other package inspection tools. Samsung TV get nuts if they have streaming access by can't get access to their "special" servers.

Yeah, was so annoyed when my dumb tv was on the way out because you can't buy regular tvs any more. Got the cheapest smart tv possible and put modded apps on it... so I guess no ads is a bonus

the current generation of OLED screens are better than anything that came before, but the "smart" features can be annoying... or not. It's nice that I can easily watch streaming content on my Samsung.

Maybe, although OLED screen technology has come a long, long way, and it's probably the best thing around. If I have to buy a smart TV to have that technology, it's worth it to me.

Yes. Mine has to warm up when I turn it on and when im watching on the tv everyday it switches over to the streaming services by itself.
