there was a moment when populism (i don't really know what trump styled populism is) was on a rise. and of course it is still out there in a solid minority of the population. but i think there has also been a rebuke of populism as we've seen how it ultimately plays out.

I don't think so. By now, trump is a figure no one wants to be compared to or associated with; just like hitler.

Of course, this doesn't mean that the right has lost support in a massive way. I do think that its popularity has reached its peak for some time, and that it's now slowly starting to decline.

People are getting tired of the right's extremism, lies, incompetence and drama.

They're certainly aggressively marketing their position while the main parties are doing little to counteract. They've definitely got the support of the tabloids too.

My prediction is they'll grab power, make things worse, then people will return to the mainstream parties.

no. it's just that pretty much every culture gets more xenophobic as their financial situation tightens up. so really what you see isn't a spread of "trump populism". it's the economic decline of the west that causes stress in people which naturally leads to hightened xenophobia and racism.
