Who enforces this law?

Question

Ok, so, like, we use milk crates a lot around here in these parts 'cuz they come in handy for all kinds of stuff like carrying milk jugs full of homemade hard cider. (Just for example, of course) But, I happen to observe , with my amazing powers of observation, this subtle, almost hidden warning:

And my guilty conscience forces me to confess I didn't register those crates! (And where do I even register crates? The town office?) So I'm not the registered owner but they're on my property! But I really didn't take them in the first place! I really didn't! So, like, is this breaking the law as bad as when I tore the tags off pillows? Or is it just a set up or something? Am I just being framed? Am I just an innocent victim of cruel circumstances? Do I need to drink a fifth and call my attorney? Or is that, plead the fifth?🤔

Anyways, are there just, like, Milk Crate police out there searching for me now or something? And it makes me ask, Who enforces this law?

That’s a liability waiver. If you do something dumb like use the crate for an unintended purpose and it results in property damage, injury or death, you can’t hold the manufacturer or registered owner responsible. Any attempt to do so can and likely will result in counter suits and possibly even criminal prosecution.
Additionally, it allows them to deny you the deposit refund if you were to collect a number of them and try to return them for money. If the registered owner doesn’t have documentation of a business arrangement with you, they can take their crates and tell you to suck eggs.

Your guilty conscience is a curiosity to me. What is it that you have actually done that leads you to such frivolous worries as distraction? Ell oh ell!

The question is what law? Writing "prohibited by law" doesn't mean anything.
My father distillates home made wines. Base of distiller is a stainless steel 50L beer barrel, it has similar text on it and it's meaningless by law since you own that barrel. When you own something you can do with that thing what you want. Of course if you forget illegal distillation but it's tolerated here if you don't sell that stuff, but who would be foolish enough to sell such premium cognac

I've pondered the same thing on occasion.

It might be similar to copyright laws.
Who hasn't made a copy of something that's copyrighted?

That being said, I confess to being in possession of numerous milk crates, even some very old wooden ones.
They've all been given to me by various folks over the years.

The dairies can have them back if they want to come and get them.

I had an uncle who drove a truck for a dairy.
He told me that the dairies really don't want back the crates that have gotten away from them.

I remember when I was a kid and our neighbor delivered for Wonder bread, he had dozens of those crates laying around his yard. One day, him and my dad got all liquored up and started burning them. Jesus H. Christ, people in town saw the smoke and thought a fucking passenger jet crashed! The cops and fire department showed up. No one went to jail but I can't remember if all the evidence was already up in smoke. They ended up restarting the fire that night, so no one could see the smoke. They're both highly intelligent individuals!

I just checked my milk crates and - phew - they don't carry the same warning. But it is theft and I could face jail time it seems after googling.

I am envious that you could bury your illegal crates under snow in the park and not know anything in the spring when they emerge.

Google says they float so I can't just chuck them off the pier as I first thought.

I volunteer at our church's weekly Food Pantry. We are continually bringing in dairy in these crates, emptying them, and bringing them back. Also, there are collapsible produce crates (see pic). The "handle" one each end is actually a kind of a lever that unlocks the walls and they all flop down onto the base, falling flat. (You can see a bit of the lock pin at the top left corner of the pic, beneath the user's wrist. ). In either case, we just bring back the empties when we make the following week's pick-up of food. I'd say that this is just printed there to cover the stores/wholesalers/shippers' legal rears if (the crates) were used by someone for functions other than shipping food.  Collapsible produce crate.

The way my grandpa explained it to me, you're basically borrowing those crates.

You would pay a service for milk, they deliver the milk in a crate, when they drop off a new shipment, they take the old crate back.

People were not leaving the old one out for the delivery man to take so repeat offenders were charged for the crates because obviously that's a huge cost if you have hundreds of people doing it.

Just curious but do they have any unique number on them that would link them to a specific person? You could argue that they were responsible for dumping them on your property.

I suspect the law is more about traceability, being able to trace crates of milk to the dairy it came from. I doubt anyone ever gets done for carrying beer in them.

Moron, those labels are for use within the industry so they don't steal truckloads or shiploads of equipment; they don't apply to consumers after the crates have been discarded.

Sounds like something a politician from a dairy-producing state put into law to get votes. Totally unenforceable law.

It does make it easier, though, to prosecute someone caught stealing milk crates. 🤔

It's probably just property law in the sense that the stores and distributors only lend them to you and you have to give them back. Here we have a 2,50€ deposit to ensure that. :-)
