If they just enforced the laws we already have things would be substantially better. After the trouble they gave the president in removing people who are in this country illegally, there's no way they'll even consider things like caning, nor is it necessary if the existing laws were enforced.

I'd enjoy seeing people disciplined so they don't commit such crimes more than once. What I don't enjoy is seeing people repeat offend, which in many cases, results in death and injuries including to innocent people. Every brain is different and some brains seem to need to feel that pain to associate right and wrong.

Well, it's interesting to me that you actually believe that beating people will somehow make them stop committing crimes. It's kind of the idea that committing a crime will somehow stop a crime. Fortunately, there has been plenty of research on this, and it shows that this kind of punishment doesn't work. You think it would be a great deterrent, but in fact what it normally does is it makes people so angry that they do something much worse than they did in the first place. We found that out the hard way with a few centuries of extremely punitive prisons, and we don't do that any more, specifically for the reason that it promotes even more crime.

Now I do realize that you probably would enjoy being the person that's actually doing the beatings, but there's probably lots of people like you that would enjoy doing that and somehow have more qualifications for the job, whatever those qualifications might be. Probably a history of abusing animals or abusing children or something of that nature would be a good start for getting your dream job here. They have fewer problems in areas where there is discipline. I got disciplined (spank/belt) and I didn't do "that" again.
This research is crap and I haven't read it. Someones flawed idea has trashed a generation.
It's removal of sufficient consequence and then couple that with "everyone gets rewarded. That is very questionable.

Id go the opposite direction, I'd whack them, including people that litter. Just little whacks plus community service to do cleanup. It's what wasn't learned in 1st grade and parents weren't there or they lived in a slob house. Then see how it goes. Have one state that is crapola like mine implement it and compare to others after a while.

Am curious, is it only physical punishment that is scientifically flawed, or is it financial and other punative as well.
Why? Because why does california still hand out fines for traffic violations if punishment is bad? I'm sure some people respond terribly to financial punishment and do worse things... we see it on the news. So they should cease all financial penalties and just trust the human to do the right thing next time, because we are all really good at our core.

The problem with traffic fines is that they are not adjusted for the driver's income. It's ridiculous that someone paid $50,000/year and barely getting by pays the same traffic fine as someone paid $1,000,000/year. In Finland and Switzerland, people are fined by hours or days of income. Make $5,000/day and a fine for speeding could be $5,000 or more.

I don't know if financial punishment works or not. It may, but I know for a fact that physical punishment doesn't work. I never said that people get rewarded, and I don't think they necessarily should be rewarded, but I also think that beating people up is probably not a good idea.

again it's not that I want to do it, it was done to me and worked. I saw it work for others. My father got that it worked. In your generation, someone spun up some "research" that says it don't work, so there was no spanking allowed. In general, it is bad without the emotional support... just punishment alone doesn't work, doesn't work on dogs... they get confused. The problem is people aren't thinking of how to solve the problems. It's the thinking that is the issue.
How could there be lack of knowledge and research on if financial punishment works, or even prison time for that matter.
Again, the streets of singapore and even greater China were quite clean relatively speaking. Taiwan was pristine. You need to go travel and see it, see some US cities with garbage and filth everywhere. Then come up with a solution. If do those things in asia, ya get into trouble. The police pull ya aside... the threat is all it takes as it is real. So it's better, no gum on the street.

Even the concept of God, which you don't believe, is a disciplinarian... consequences. Fathers are traditionally disciplinarians, which is why kids with fathers have fewer issues. Not that it isn't fair, wasn't fair when I got it. Someday I'll dig into the actual research but it will be more finding out whom funded it and whom made the conclusions. Either way, your freedom of choice (and the others that think like you), are limiting people like myself, from cleaning up our environment... without coming up with solutions that work. Since your party is in charge of my area, your party needs to come up with research and find solution. That's logical.

All punishments should be much more severe. I would be satisfied if every crime counted toward a three strike law. After your third strike, you’re executed. It doesn’t even have to be the same crime. A parking ticket, smacking your spouse, and littering? Done. Executions should also be public, and attendance compulsory for everyone with any kind of criminal record. So that they have a constant reminder of the path their on.
Give me the reins, and i’ll all but end crime in a single generation.
