You have to remember the English are naturally a barbaric violent race. They came to Britain as invaders and spent the majority of their occupation waring against each other. They're starting to become civilised now but for some old habits die hard. In the UK we call it "the English disease."

The question I ponder is going to matches all around the country is very expensive and it's hard to believe any of these people are desirable employees to companies. So Where's the money coming from?

Britain doesn't have as severe punishments either legal or social as the US does for that sort of thing. In the US if you are getting drunk and destroying other people's property, first you will go to prison for a long time and when you get out you can kiss any hope of your dream career goodbye. In Britain a lot of the time they will simply give you a small fine and send you on your way. I am not claiming the US is crime free, we of course have a higher rate than Britain, however we generally avoid getting into brawls on TV.

Take uptight, repressed, overweight men with poor job and poor relationship prospects, then douse them in beer and they feel like tonight's football is the only night of their life that is ever going to matter. Then their footballers loose, they break stuff and end up arrested.

Same story in the US for the most part. But we have an added twist. It's not unusual for the fans of the winning team to trash the area of the city around the stadium, burn cars, smash store windows, throw bottles. Apparently even winning pisses off our idiots.

Hooligan culture has a root in belonging to a tribe. The tribe is being fans of a soccer club. It's similar to Mexicans or people from Balkans which tend to create gangs.
Some young men have a need to belong to strongly hierarchical social structure with leaders which aren't some kind of controlled opposition and get their status due natural selection. However I think this could be longer discussion why boys struggle to find positive role models in western societies with artificial leaders and fake ideologies.

In the USA England has two polar opposite images for men.

    • The effeminate upper class snob with disturbingly impeccable manners who we're never quite sure is straight or gay.
    • The hooligans / working class guys haunting pubs in flat caps who we can barely understand when they speak.

Because you only go to prison for tweeting any anti-establishment and alleged 'far-right' (ie anti-immigration) content.

If you're involved in burglary, petty crime or violence, you pretty much have free reign.

I think there's a lot of frustration due to instability and stress that comes from financial difficulties and so hooliganism is one of the many ways people will unleash these frustrations.

Britain is toast, now. They have lost their way and are helpless. The Scots better arm up.
