Guys, do you remember when men used to exit the car during traffic stops?

It was brought to my attention, that pre 1990's, if the police pulled you over, the male drivers usually exited their vehicles and walked back to the police car, without being asked. I guess it was pretty much the way it was at the time.

On the evening when he died, Frank Tyson crashed a Chevrolet Malibu into a utility pole in the 1700 block of Sherrick Road SE, causing the pole to break and fall into the street, investigators said.

Canton Police Department Traffic Bureau officers Beau Schoenegge and Camden Burch were the first law enforcement personnel to arrive at the scene.

Based on witness reports about where the driver had gone, Schoenegge and Burch went to the nearby AMVETS Post 124 at 1822 Sherrick Road SE, where they found him.

As officers entered the building around 8:27 p. m., a woman standing in the foyer told police, "Please get him out of here now."

Frank Tyson had been in repeated trouble with the law. At the time of his death, he was wanted on a parole violation allegedly committed after his completion of a 24-year sentence imposed in 2000 for kidnapping, burglary, failure to comply with the order of a police officer, receiving stolen property and grand theft of a motor vehicle.

I saw this question this morning and asked a few older guys I work with. They definitely remember! One man said he remembered his dad getting pulled over, for going the wrong way down a one-way lol he said that he grabbed papers from the glove box and met the officer half way. Another man said, his older brother got pulled over for speeding, when they were going home from prom. He said, his brother opened his door, as the cop was approaching and the cop said, "get all your information and walk to my car". I wanna ask my dad the next time I talk to him but it does seem it was actually somewhat common.

Were these guys born and raised in a rural area? @DryGermanGuy brought up a very valid point. That it was more common out in the country vs an urban area. I googled it and found that to be true.

I never heard of such a thing. Cops hate that because they see it as a potential threat.

As far as I know, you were always supposed to roll down your window, turn off the engine, and keep your hands on the steering wheel as the officer approached.

I was taught to do this , in Australia I still would , I did do it in USA and all hell broke loose ( 1998 ) , but I've not be pulled over for years now.

As surprised as you were by that response, that's about how surprised I was finding out the police almost expected you to get out in the past.

Yep I lost my license ( speeding ) when I was 19 , in country Victoria , that cop in Benalla never got out of his car.
It was expected , you needed to show the officer you were highly operable

It didn't help , 4 months on the bus..

I think that was more of a rural thing, at least that's how I remember it from here.

The people I talked to did live in a rural area. They remember their dad's getting out of the car and talking to the cop while standing between the two cars.

Yes it was the suburbs bout ten miles out of a major city.
