Compared to any time in the past. It could be the Industrial Revolution or the Cold War. Maybe both.

Modern compared to what? I saw films like gladiator so we modern are more benevolent. But i also saw brutal beheadings on youtube done by "those who use quran to recruit soldiers." So i say: nice people are as benevolent as past. Brutal as malicious as past.

What era are you comparing it with? Generally it's more benevolent. World-wide violence has decreased considerably over the past 50 years, and so has poverty and disease.

Another example: The EU has banned capital punishment, which used to be a common sentence for crimes against property.
