Do you think that society could ever be like Gilead from the Handmaid's Tale and the Testaments?

Question

For those that haven't seen it, it's a dystopian story set in the Republic of Gilead, a totalitarian and religious authoritarian regime that overthrew the U. S. government. Facing a severe fertility crisis, the ruling class subjugates fertile women, forcing them into reproductive slavery to bear children for the elite.

The Handmaids: Fertile women are rounded up and assigned to wealthy, childless couples. Known as "Handmaids," they are ritually raped by the male heads of the household (Commanders) with the goal of producing children for the family.

I ask this because of how messed up society is becoming with our current administration and how they are trying to take away women's rights in a lot of places and how the birth rate has decreased tremendously.

It may not happen but I fear something like this could happen to try and fix the birth rate. But maybe not.

What's your thoughts?

I suppose there is a slight and very distantly remote possibility, since China had basically the exact opposite policy from 1979 until 2015. But if you ask me, I think China's policy is was much easier to enforce than this dopey book.

I mean... if you're a left-winger who hates babies, families, men, motherhood, and by extension, Christianity, you basically think we're already there, or are at least very close to it. Now, I've seen your posts and you're not that person (I think you've even said you want the "trad-wife" kind of lifestyle, am I wrong?), so please believe me when I say that I mean this in good faith and that I don't want to hurt your feelings, but you need to be smarter than that. People keep acting like Donald Trump is trying to turn America into the fear-porn that is Handmaid's Tale, but... well, for one thing, you're not going to convince me that the guy who ran bikini contests and beauty pageants is on the verge of wrapping all women in red blankets with funny white hats. For another, Trump and his "Catholic" vice president have both expressed support for mifepristone, a method of medication abortions, which is currently how most abortions are done in the United States. Both also support in vitro fertilization.

So no, even though I have my issues with Trump this time around, he is not trying to "take away women's rights" (or whatever they're calling abortion these days). And no, America becoming "Gilead" is not going to happen.

And I'm sorry, I just have to share this meme...

Oh yeah, and one last thing, I've seen a claim that Marge Atwood based her silly book on the People of Praise, a Catholic Charismatic group in which Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett is involved. This is not true. She based it on the People of Hope, which I do not believe has an official recognition by the Catholic Church; I do not believe the Church holds them in good grace.

Considering that the Supreme Court tried to make it illegal to mail mifepristone and the backlash was so loud and so angry that it turned into a lawsuit where the court made the decision to preserve the right to receive this medicine, I don’t think we’ll be like Gilead anytime soon.

Christianity does not have such power though if it did it would much like it did throughout history.
However Islam has such power, though lucky for Americans Islam isn't powerful enough being at 1% and having Mexicans far out weigh them in power, America's more diversity makes it harder for Islam, cause it's not only Mexicans but you have larger populations of way more backgrounds.
However as to us in Uk... well 6% don't sound like lot but it's a drastic percentage to anyone educated enough to understand.
6% sounds low but due to our lack of diversity and the rate it's increased by over the years that's really high and the fact we have green party, which has gained massive following by it's Islam backing, which also happens to make it one of the next leading parties that will rival reform. Green party wants to only enable this rate to increase even more, draw more power to it that's very worrying.

Now that being said do I think Islam will actually rise to power and create sharia law over here make everything much worse than Handmaids tale? Probably not... since reform will likely win or even if not people will realize and push back but the fact it's not impossible is scary enough. Where as US it's impossible.

Oh PLEASE. Trump had nothing to do with a case making it to the Supreme Court regarding abortion - that case was started during the Biden administration. Neither Trump nor the administration had any input on that case. It was a Supreme Court ruling.

If you look at current theocracies on the planet, they're rooted in long term traditions, the people living there have been culturally conditioned to validate such regime for this to happen. Whereas USA has no such history, no such traditions. Now USA is quite a weird country, seen from here, in the sense that it's not homogenous culturally. It's a country where you can find Amish communities and an extensive porn industry all operating under the same borders. In my opinion, it says that whenever an extreme force is spawning there, then another opposing force spawns as well. So if the idea of a theocracy ever seduces many people in the US, then another set of people should pop and oppose that very idea.

Whoever wrote Handmaid's Tale did so as an attack on Christianity. They are an anti-Christ. Christianity is why you have freedom and equality. Islam in contrast believes in Arab White Supremacy with racial superiority over Blacks and subjugation of women, polygamy, child marriage, raping slaves, etc. The Democrats love Islam, and project Islam's evil onto Christianity.
