It depends what you define as "losing". Can Iran defeat the United States head to head? No chance! I mean that would require a level of incompetence that our military just is not capable of. Not even with Trump at the helm. But that doesn't mean Iran couldn't draw it out and hurt us deeply economically (I mean, more than we already are. Of course I'm talking about DEBT). Iran's terrain plays to their advantage for defense. And They don't have to win. They just have to keep us wasting 2 to 4 million dollar missles on 20k to 50k dollar drones. The United States is already changing their strategy to lessen this. The longer this is dragged out the more it affects the world and their economies and the more likely other countries will join in some fashion. The longer this goes the clearer the battle lines will become. The United States is powerful and can fight multiple countries on multiple fronts if need be. But logistics will always be a fact of war. You can't fight a war with no ammo. so to speak.

You ever want to know why the US did something or is doing something in terms of wars or foreign policy then you look at who benefited, even wars that you may think the us lost like Afghanistan, iraq or Vietnam look at what was achieved and the beneficiaries.

US oil companies are currently making an absolute killing. Even china is now buying us oil along with Europe at inflated rates. You might not like it, but thats victory.

Think of virtually any war the US has ever fought since 1865, even wars that the US supposedly lost and its always mission accomplished and the US emerges wealthier, not to mention the secret wars the CIA fight in US economic intrests. Afghanistan certainly lost those wars. Last time I checked their governments collapsed multiple times, regardless who is supporting them. The problem is trying to nation build in such a complicated region. That is the reality with nations in endless civil war, with changing governments every decade.
